I recently upgraded from a S-1 to a S-2 and would like to use the S-1 as a replacement for my VCR. My problem is that the S-1was configed for a cable box and the location I want to use it has a direct cable coax input. As such I can’t change the channel. Adding to the problem is that the new location does not have a wired phone line (and even if it did the Tivo Service Agr has been transferred to the S-2).

Therefore it would seem that if I re-start the “guided setup” to reset the input from “cable box” to “direct cable” I would not be able to complete the “requires 2 phone calls” steps…. Any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure you will have to redo guided setup, complete with the initial call(s). Once you redo GS and tell the TiVo that you are using cable without a box then you can move it to a new location and start using it as a manual recorder. Note that the clock does drift a bit, so every few months you will either need to let TiVo dial in to reset the clock (which it will do even without a subscription) or adjust your recording times to compensate.

It has been a long time since I've done this, so please excuse me if I've misremembered Any of this or if anything has changed. Also this is all condirional on you having a TiVo Series 1 that originally shipped with software version 1.3. Almost all S1s shipped with this software except for a few Sony units.

Hope this helps

Yes, you can just do a clear and delete everything and then re-run GS. Of course you will need to take it somewhere where there is a phoneline.

You will also need Version 1.3 or earlier for the software. As Tivo cut out the manual recording features after that.

Wrong. You can do VCR mode with any unit that originally shipped with 1.3.
I have personally tested a machine at 3.0 SW.

If you do a clear and delete a flag gets set in the machine/account and you have to call TiVo CSR to allow VCR mode. So don't do one.

You will need a phone line to do Guided Setup - but it can be done anywhere. Just pick the line up for the area the machine will be located in along with area code and zip code for the new location.

BTW if you don't have a phone line then the clock will drift on the S1 TiVo. There is no way to set the time w/o a hack or a phone line.

"Mister I have no clue what I'm talking about" AKA 'Mister I just repeat the obvious that has already been mentioned" AKA "Mister I'll just post some irrelevant information that's not related to this discussion" strikes again.

Here's another lesson for you to ignore.
It helps a great deal to have valid useful information when handing out advice. That is to say, in the absence of any valid useful information, it's best not to reply.
