Service w/ no commitment?
Hey guys
I have a S1 laying around, was previously activated. Can I call up and activate this on a month-to-month basis or will I need to re-commit to a year? It's definitely not worth committing to another year with the prices of new units so low, but if I can do month-to-month on this unit them I'm happy to do it.

No. But if you were to decide to get a different tivo, you could transfer service from the old S1 to the new one to finish off the commitment. However, doing this will make you ineligible for any rebate on the new tivo. If you commitment to a year, tivo will cost you $16.95. You have to commit to 2 or 3 years to get lower prices - $14.95 & $12.95.
Wow, that seems so stupid. To clarify, this tivo WAS activated for over a year, and now is not. I was going to put it back on month-to-month. If I understand correctly, part of the month to month price helps them subsidize the cost of the unit. If I were activating this now (and since it's already gone through the one year) it seems like it would be all profit for them. But whatever, I'm happy to have them help me eat the cost of a new one instead...pretty dumb.

Yes, it is stupid, but that is just the way it is. If the TiVo is currently not active, activating it requires a 1, 2, or 3 year commitment.
TiVo pricing is too complicated now, to start adding another layer of pricing for old TiVos I think would be too much. Why activate a old Series 1 when you can get a new Series 2 for less then zero (-$20 or something like that) for the same year commitment. I would look at one of the Web Specials from Tivo.com
You sometimes can get a Series 2 DT for Free including Shipping with a One Year Commitment.
It would pretty much be the same as Re-activating your Series 1 with the One Year Plan, but with a Newer unit which better features etc.
Of course you could also get the 2 or 3 Year Commitment, but it seems you do not want this.
Also, with the Series 1, if it has Software Version 1.3 or earlier, it will still manually record. You do not need a Sub for this. It pretty much acts like a VCR with no tape.

The Series 1 units with Software versions up to and including Version 1.3 had the Manual Recording option. After Version 1.3 Tivo removed these features as well as others.
So, if you have a Series 1 unit with Software version 1.3 or earlier then you CAN use it to manually record shows.
If you have any Software version after 1.3 then Tivo has removed this feature!
And you do NOT need a subscription to use the unit to manually record. Again mick66 is blowing smoke out his a**.

This has been covered dozens of times over the past few years that I've been around. Yet everyone seems to continually get it wrong.
What people always get wrong is that they read a post that says "Only Tivos that shipped with v1.3 can do manual recording w/o a sub" and their limited ability to comprehend (as proven time and time again by you) turns that statement into "Only Tivos with V1.3 can record manually w/o a sub" and then they vomit it up when they think they are helping someone.
The facts:
Tivos that shipped before 10/01 shipped with V1.3. after this they shipped with a new version of the software. At the same time, tivo decided that these units manufactured and shipped after 10/01 will not be able do manual recordings w/o a subscription.
The tivos shipped after 10/01 are most likely to not not record w/o a sub

Tivo (so far) does not change rules retroactively, so when they changed the rules it only applied to the tivos made after that and existing tivo are still allowed to go by the old rules.

in one of those updates the record manually without a Sub flag was overwritten on all of them. Now if you have a S1 that shipped originally with v1.3 but was since upgraded nad lost the manual record ability you have to call TiVo to get it reactivated. Rather than do some complicated downgrade to v1.3 they just send a patch that will flip the flag on whatever version is on the S1 and allow for manual recordings without a sub again.
