What exactly happens with a Service Connection?
What exactly happens with a Service Data Download?
They don't happen at the same time. If the software is not being updated what is a Service Data Download?
What does GC: mean?
Would I be correct in assuming that Index: has the same meaning as the entry "Support for fast lookup" in Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Index_(information_technology)

GC = Garbage Collection
I believe this is when the system does a system check of the file system and cleans up anything that needs attention. (Kinda like a defrag on a Windows system) I'll let those more in the know explain this further.
The index refers to the guide index. With each update of guide data, it needs to be indexed in order for the season pass and wishlist functions to work.

Thanks.

Service Connection
A phone call is made to TiVo about every 7-10 days. TiVo collects service metrics and anonymous viewing information. New software updates are downloaded via satellite but a call to TiVo is usually required to have the DirecTiVo restart and update the software. Also phone calls are made to DirecTV to send any pay per view charges ordered via the DirecTiVo.

Service Data Download
This occurs overnight and downloads Showcases and other DVR promotional videos to the DirecTiVo. This will not delete your personal recordings.

GC - Garbage Collection
As indicated, this is run daily to clean out old log files.

Indexing
This occurs about twice a day. The DirecTiVo collects updated guide information via a satellite data channel. The indexing puts the guide data into an indexed format that DirecTiVo uses. Indexing also occurs about 1 hour after the DirecTiVo is restarted. It also possibly occurs within an hour or so when changes are made to the Season Passes.

I have been trying to determine if any of these time-stamped System Info entries correlate with my New-with-6.3e problems. No evidence tis so.
