I came back from a week away to find my Philips Series1 unresponsive--no lights, no fan, no picture but a faint clicking sound delivered to the TV. It was also keeping the phone line off hook with the same clicking sound over the other phones.

I took off the cover and pulled the power connector to the hard drive. The voltages seemed low--about 5 volts across the two leads on one side, about one across the other two leads. I think it blew a capacitor, there seems to be some caramel colored stuff on the power supply board below one of the smaller cylindrical caps. The same faint clicking sound could be heard near the power supply.

The hard drive passed Western Digital's quick diagnostics when connected to a PC.

I suppose a new power supply is in order. Any chance more things are fried?

pretty good odds it's the PS, Series 1 PSs were a weak point which is why weaknees (and I assume others) have replacements for about $50.

good news, they most frequently fail by just dying, as opposed to taking a lot of other components with them.

In fact since the HD works, that says you didn't overvoltage the +5v and +12v since they both hit the drives. I say that's a positive sign.
