Series 3 sluggish, choppy, unresponsive, rebooting in 2011

Hello All.
Apporoximately three months ago I started to notice that my tivo was running sluggish, the fast forward and rewind was choppy (not smooth), it rebooted once on it's own, when in tivo central it took a long time to scroll down or up or to do any kind of moving around while in tivo central. Then my tivo started to reboot on it's own. First once, then it was doing it every ten minutes.

After a few calls to TiVo Support, they tried to help, but finally they told me to try a Kickstart 57 (and if this kickstart 57 does not work, it will kill the tivo). I decided against trying the kickstart because I didnt want to kill my tivo if it didnt work. So I unplugged my Series 3 and just watched regular tv (which really sucks when you are used to being able to rewing and pause...). So after 3 or 4 days I decided to plug in my TiVo... And I worked with no problems at all!! Until today. Now I am having the same problems again. Does anyone else have any of these problems? I need some help!

Thank you!

I think the kickstart danger is overplayed. Read through this post.
Hello. Thank you for responding to my post. This problem I am having with my series 3 is driving me crazy. I think that it has something to do with a new iPhone, or new laptop that is newish that is new since the tivo problem started.
Do you think it could be a new elcectronic/technical item that is causing interference to the tivo?

My next question/comment is when I was speaking to TiVo Support they told me that if the kickstart 57 doesn't work, then there is a great chance that it could cause the death of the TiVo. So that is why I didnt do it. Do you think it is an exaggeration by tivo support?
Its not IPhone or Laptop related.

Most likely - something is up with your HD. If its recoverable - Kickstart 57 might help. If its not Kickstart 57 might accelerate the HD death. But - I don't know why you would wait ... if you don't use the Tivo, it might as well be dead. and If your HD fails - its a pretty easy/cheap replacement.

The most likely interference would be something that puts out infra-red light, intentionally or otherwise, screwing up your remote control signals to the TiVo.
The remote control false signal issue is a good one to investigate but, assuming you have the S3 (model 648), it has to be old enough to suspect the most likely failure, which is the hard drive. Try running kickstart 54, instructions here:

or here:

However no kickstart test is totally conclusive -- you have to remove the drive, connect it to a PC, and run the mfr's extended tests to be sure.

If you are up to removing/installing a hard drive, there are options ranging from $50 to $110 for expanding your internal drive to 1 GB. The methods costing less than $110 (price of a plug-in drive from DVR_DUDE on eBay) require more DIY effort.
