If you are going to upgrade the hard drive in a Tivo HD anyway, doesn't make sense to just buy a Series 3??

New Series 3 can be had for $599

New Tivo HD can be had for $299

Wont an upgrade of hard drive space to the Tivo HD bring these figures close enough to warrant a Series 3 purchase?

I just thought of this now (of course I already purchased a Tivo HD), am I missing something?

Another thought/question. Can i use the hard drive from my DirecTivo - HR10-250 and pop it in the Tivo HD i just bought. What would I need to do to the hard drive? Or should I just reformat the old drive from the HR10-250 and use it when they support the esata port? Is that feasible?

Most people aren't going to stick 250GB into a TiVo HD - so you'd be looking at upgrading either one. So you need to think of it as starting with a $300 base price, or a $600 base price and then upgrading both. So the TiVo HD saves you money.

Even if you did just want to stick 250GB into an HD, they can be had for well under $100 now - around $65 - so for the same size you still save a lot over a Series3.

I just bought a brand new Series 3 with lifetime for $1060.00 on ebay. I feel that I got a great deal. It comes with the original 250GB hard drive.

Yes they are and no they won't.

You can get 500GB drives for $100 now. I just bought several 750GB WD drives for $200 a piece. Thats a far cry from the $300 I spent on 250GB drives 4.5 years ago years ago.

I beleive the HR10-250 uses a PATA type drive and the series 3 units us a SATA type drive.

The connectors and controllers are totally different and would not be compatiable.

You could use an adapter if you really wanted to. But drives are so cheap it's easier just to get a new one.

Why would you pay $300 more for 150GB of storage space ?

Your question is why would anyone buy the HDTivo, my question is why would anyone buy an S3. The HDTivo supports MCards which some cable companies are moving to to be assured of the one card/one port situation.

The THX on the S3 doesn't really mean much .. The TivoHD is a winner especially since anyone doing any serious shopping can pick it up for $250 or so, and Tivo is running a special 3 year for $299 deal which equates to a measly $8/month.

How long until 1TB drives are $200-$250?

I refuse to pay a GB premium for larger drives, and 500GB drives are currently the best deal.
