Talekd to Tivo regardig the lack of processes for establishing a server (even though it states that you can manually add a server) Was told by Customer Service that this was not a Cable labs issue, They will not allow MRV,Servers, or transfers from series 3 machines due to Video copyright issues.

This is due to the fact that what you are transferring is a clean digital copy of the media, it is goes against copyright laws.

The reasoning that they will not let you downgrade transfers to serfies 2is that if one does not get it, noone does.

What a waste of $700. Welcome to the death of TIVO

Wow, a CSR told you? Then it MUST be so.

Am I the only person who thinks that T2G and MRV would be nice features, but not the sole or even significant reason I bought an S3? Yes, they would be nice, but I was just happy to be able to record HD content on a Tivo!

I agree. Whether or not T2G or MRV ever come to the Series3, I still have the functionality that I wanted. I lived with a Tivo for years without either of those features . Are they nice features? Sure. But not having them in their HD boxes (if true) is hardly the death of Tivo.

+1

Now that I have them, I've used them exactly once. I like the MAIN feature of TiVo, which is to record shows that I like. Anything more is a bonus. I have purchased a THD in full confidence that I will NOT miss these features that I never use.

I was very upset with missing features like MRV etc. So I didn't buy the S3. $800 for that POS? That's too F***ing much! (Apologies to those who did buy, most of you are probably happy because you've had a year more of convenient HD than I have).

But I just coughed up $300 for a TiVo HD without these features. Maybe they will arrive, maybe they won't. But at the new price point the box becomes quite attractive even without MRV.
You'll get better information on this forum then you will from any CSR.
I'm more inclined to believe what TiVo's VP of Product Marketing, Jim Denney, said regarding MRV and TTG to in an interview last week:

"# TiVoToGo and multi-room viewing "will not be released with the HD," but TiVo is actively working on restoring functionality, which will come to the Series3 shortly before HD.
# TiVo is also working to ensure TiVoToGo will not be resolution-restricted, only copy-flag restricted. (Read: TiVoToGo will work for SD and HD content.)"

I agree. I just saw someone on AVSforum summarize the issue: For a some, TTG and MRV are the features that differentiate Tivo from the Cablecompany DVRs. For most others, these features may be nice additions but are often unused. For this majority, the user interface and fact TiVo does what it supposed to keeps them with TiVo.

Please send your S3 to me then.

that is another aspect of the problem but solvable by TiVo in its own right. Clearly most any SD analog content can be moved around with the exception of some premium channels that might limit copies via a macrovision.
All Tivo has to do is work out a scheme to not drop the original digital version out via TTG. MRV may be different. Also anything transmitted in the clear on OTA can not have such restrictions. The CSR was not providing all the details of such an issue(I would not expect them to go into a long conversation :)).
Anyhow TiVo is working on this as evidenced from this paragraph in Megazone's review of the TiVo HD. It is just before the "Getting Inside" section of his review.

I added the bold emphasis
Also like the S3, network video transfers (TiVoToGo, TiVoToComeBack, and Multi-Room Viewing) are not yet enabled. I also talked to TiVo about this, and I was told that they’re planning to enable these by the end of the year. So, by the end of 2007 we should have both official eSATA and network video transfers if they can execute to plan.
ETA - thanks to Bilbo for finding the Jim Denny comments to add to the above.

Keep in mind its because of the HD content capability. At this time there isn't a single DVR on the market from ANYONE that will allow MRV of HD content. SD content yes, but not HD. SD MRV won't be around for very much longer either.

CableLabs, the cable company and all other CONTENT PROVIDERS are KILLING MRV for ALL HD! And now DIGITAL SD.

Keep in mind Analog TV is on its way out. Within the next 3 to 5 years or so. There will be NO ANALOG TV available from anyone. Within the next 5 to 8 years (maybe even less). 100% of all TV stations will be HD.

So as sad as it may seem. It isn't TIVO! You WON"T be able to get MRV on ANY DVR. Unless we can change it.

You want to change that... WRITE YOUR CONGRESSMAN, WRITE THE FCC, WRITE YOUR SENATORS!

All of your are missing the point. It's the CONTENT PROVIDERS NOT WANTING YOU TO MRV! for fear of piracy & copyright issues. (They don't care about "Fair use" if it was up to them, we wouldn't even get "Fair use" rights)

Maybe you CAN do it on your Series 2. But there is coming a day that even a series 2 will be so obsolete you won't be able to watch or record anything on it.

After February 17th, 2009. There won't be a single Series 2 that can do OTA of any type.

Within a couple years after that (or even sooner), there won't be a single Series 2 that will be able to do Cable. Keep in mind that about 98% of all cable companies have plans to DROP Analog TV service by 2012. That means you will either need a STB/DVR from your cable company, or have a cable card ready DVR/STB/TV (Or whatever they decide to replace cable cards with)

So if you really beleive your going to be able to keep doing MRV much longer, your living in a dream world!

You want MRV? Do like I said, write the FCC, Write your congressman, write your senators.

MRV is not dead for Tivo or cable companies as a whole. Motorola is already deploying MOCA based Follow Me TV solution in all their set top boxes (and their solution even extends functionality to cell phones). As pointed out above Tivo president (and other high ranking officials) have already stated they will be releasing MRV/TTG (at least on Series 3 boxes) sometime this year which will not be resolution restricted but rather copy-flag restricted. MRV is far from dead.

umm - so cable set top boxes are dropping all composite or s-video outputs?
and a couple of years to go all digital is kind of aggressive given the large number of analog customers still out there. It will be 2 years just to get OTA all digital and that is being described as a train wreck already.

Also I guess you missed the posts on Tivo plans to get MRV/TTG going on S3 and Tivo HD. So while I commend the suggestion to write govt. officials to work to defend fair use rights I think the rest of your post is alarmist and fairly inaccurate.

It is amazing how much Tivo works against itself sometimes. Yes it was a CSR, but for a majority of customers this is the face of public relations for Tivo.

And this isn't the only instance documented here of wrong information from a CSR....

Could be distortion of the message by the OP too.

I think you're mixing up "digital cable" with "digital output". Digital cable boxes will still output composite and s-video.

One of the work-arounds might end up that for now Tivo can only do TTG/MRV for analog channels(i.e. no digital channels).
Why can't MRV be enabled for those of us who don't have Cable?

Both my S2 and S3 are only hooked to an antenna, therefore not ruled by Cablelabs.

Wouldn't be hard to do, since during setup I chose Antenna only on both.
Only allow it for units that were setup thusly.

Yeah, I know.
It wouldn't be because he wants you to BUY the box would he? Not the marketing guy. What does he have to do with Sales?

I tend to beleive the Digital recording /legal angle due to the fact what Steve Jobs had to do to get one record company off the DRM teet so he can charge more for the content.

Otherwise, why would stop you from dropping a perfect digital recording of a movie and burning DVDs of it?

Whether you would buy it or sell it is irrelevant. Hollywood and the "Entertainment " Industry does not like anyone getting in the way of making them cash.

Could be. But there's been plenty of posts here with just as bad information from a CSR. They could of course all not be true, but that seems unlikely.
