Series 2 keeps freezing/HD makes grinding noise

2283 Views 9 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  unitron
Beginning last week, the picture on my Series 2 keeps on freezing and the box will not respond to any commands. I have to unplug it so it reboots. It keeps on freezing and this morning I noticed that it sounds like the hard drive is making a grinding noise and is very loud.

Does this mean the box is garbage? I have product lifetime service and would hate to lose it.

You can replace the hard drive. Either DIY or buying a pre-configured drive.

Check out this thread.
Whatever you do, you need to do it soon, especially if you want to go the DIY route. A drive that is making grinding noises is on its deathbed.
Another option is to look on Craig's list or even a yard sale for someone selling the same model Series 2 Tivo. You can then just swap the hard drive and do a clear and delete. Another advantage is that you will also have a spare power supply if that is ever needed.
Sorry to sound ignorant, but what will happen to my product life time service if I change my hard drive. The TSN isn't on the hard drive?

No, the TSN is on the motherboard. Replacing the hard drive has no effect on product lifetime service.

If you know enough not to electrocute yourself, take the cover off, disconnect the hard drive power, plug the AC cord back into the wall socket*, and see if the fan or something else other than the hard drive is making that noise.

If not, you might as well go here:

and read about adapters with a JMicron or Marvell chipset to let you use a new SATA drive in that unit. You can get a 1TB for about $50 bucks (online, drive only, no retail box).

In the meantime you should have removed the drive, hooked it up to a computer, and used either the MFS Live cd v1.4 or WinMFS to make a truncated backup before that drive dies completely.

The Series 3 "which drive to use" thread

http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=370784

has morphed into a general discussion of which drives for what TiVo. You might want to start with the last page and go backwards a way, since there're more than 250 of them.
