Most kid books associate pictures with letters and words. These kids wouldn't know what most of the pictures in the book represent or the name of it. A is for apple, have they ever seen an apple? B is for ball, do they know what a ball is? C is for cat, have they seen a cat?

It's a stretch that they were able to learn to read just from the books but with each book I think their father included a string with instructions to help them along. Maybe it's plausible.

I am only one episode in, but still on the fence. I live in the woods and feel very confident walking around in them by moonlight, but 100% if I closed my eyes I could not make it 10 feet without hurting myself. I wonder if they keep friendly fire injury statistics, because it sure seems like they would at the very least swing/stab/hack at their own tribe once the hunters broke the line.

As for string communication, that seems pretty cool and plausible until as Beryl mentioned, they switch between encoding Jerlamarel in a foot of string and the instructions to the hidden bridge in the same handful. I'll give ep 2 a go tonight and see if it sticks.

Think they depend on their sense of smell quite a bit. Also they have their own codes and sounds to communicate with their clan.

The "Fresh Blood" episode was intense so I hope you get through that before giving up.

How to put this nicely . . . . Jason Momoa really can act and perform. I really know him from Stargate: Atlantis, and if you watch him, he has a great use of nuance (as well as the more obvious physicality). (In fact, the majority of the principal cast in that show was similarly gifted--the acting there, perhaps because it is scifi, never has received the mainstay recognition it deserves).

She "prays" a couple of times. What she is doing is less interesting than her prayer.

In one episode she is alone and says some things that resembles words in the "Lord's Prayer". In another, she is with another person and mentions wanting Jerlamarel. Given how easily she kills people, it is risky to hear anything that makes her seem weak.

We still have a lot to learn about Jerlamarel and the death of her sister.

Just finished up e02, so I am still in. I will go back and watch the prayer scenes later once the kids are asleep.

ETA: The praying from e02 is definitely something I think was needed for the storyline, the one from e01 maybe not so much.

Well, someone didn’t get the notice that it would not be easy to off the queen. What is her plan for her kingdom after turning off the waterworks?

It was weird how there was so much talk about the restless inhabitants but we never got to see anyone outside of the palace.

The Witchfinders are getting close at the end of episode 3. The episode had the children grow up and the both used their knowledge of sight differently.
Baba Voss shows his fighting skills in the episode. Lots of action in the episode.

Yes, it was in E01 (and that's NOT what was missed; it was a scene my wife would ask me to skip too...if she had know about it)...and I agree with another poster that it wasn't that interesting.

How does a string communicate the shape of written letters? The father has never seen them so he can't help.

One other thing: almost everybody keeps their eyes open. I understand, we have sighted actors, but typically only people who once had sight do that. People who are blind from birth don't learn to open their eyes, and they usually describe keeping their eyes open as tiring because of atrophy and disuse.

The string could say something like "The first page is an A P P L E which is food." The kids would then associate the letters A P P L E from the string with the letters of the word apple from the book.

I really think you're over-thinking it. Why would they not know what an apple is?

I think they just had a kids' reader in the box, and were able to use that to learn how to read.
