Not sure what the purpose of this function is - does it actually do anything you can't do by simply pausing the Tivo, hitting record on the DVD or VCR, then hitting play on the Tivo? Do folks use this function?

Yes, I use it all the time.

1) it puts a convenient 'info screen' at the beginning (but IMHO stays onscreen about 5 times too long)
2) it prevents you from *easily* interrupting it. While hitting most things on the remote end up putting the icon on the screen that you're saving to VCR (and a second one brings up the cancel/resume save to vcr menu), it's still slightly convenient.. it prevents accidentally hitting tivo from stopping it or something.

If I'm dubbing something off that I want to keep, I will most likely restart it in the rare case where I get the save to vcr icon on it.. but if I'm saving off for some other reason, I just live with it.

The info screen is the major reason though.. (e.g. I'm saving off the musical guest from a talk show, and after I edit the recording on the other recorder, I leave the info screen there).
