Okay, hope you guys can help. I've got a Series 1 DirecTiVo with a 120 GB A Drive and a 40 GB B Drive. The B Drive is a Maxtor that has failed, got a bad code on it. Appears to be surface problems. Tried to copy drive to new B drive - 120 GB drive, but it won't allow me to boot once I put it in the machine. I get the GSOD. Tried one of the tricks here to create a temp large swap file on the A drive, it still won't rebuild the B drive. One of the sectors on the original that was bad was Sector 1, got as much data off that that I could. Also had some bad sectors elsewhere, used various tricks found here to get as much data as I could.

Now I'm at a loss as to how to procede. Is there any way to save the programming, or am I stuck with simply creating a fresh unit? I suspect there is a way, but can't seem to find the right way to go to do it. Something about writing a good image to the new B drive and copying the data off the old one sector by sector? Can anyone point the way to the right instructions?

Sorry. You'll have to reimage fresh drives. Because of the way that Tivo "marries" together two hard drives, there's no way to preserve recordings once one drive is damaged.

You'll find additional resources in the Tivo Upgrade Center Forum here.

If I can't save the info onthe one drive, then I'll just have to live with it, I suppose. :(

Next question would be, since I have to make a backup of a good TiVo, I understand I'll need an FAT32 partition on my hard drive, I have one with <1 GB available, the rest is NTFS. How will I be able to mount that particular partition?

Also, is there any danger having a drive with Windows XP connected to the computer when I'm doing my backup if I boot from the MFSTools CD? (That's the drive referred to above.) I seem to recall reading somewhere that XP can mess up TiVo disks, but perhaps I'm just remembering incorrectly or being paranoid. I don't need to mess up the other TiVos programming as well, my family will shoot me.
