Samsung AV Component Adapter - No Audio

Happy New Years,

I purchased a Samsung UN46D6003 LED TV for the basement. To record non HD channels I hooked up my TiVo HUMAX DVD recorder through the Samsung AV Component Adapter. I also connected from cable box to TiVo to Samsung. This set up worked fine for a day or two, then I lost the video signal. I twisted the connectors a little and the video came back. I decided to change the video wire and have not had a video problem since. However, after about a week, I've lost the audio signal for recorded programs and TV. Nothing I've tried (twisting the connectors, changing the audio wires, rebooting TiVo, etc.) has restored the audio. The audio works fine when watching on the HDMI and TV setting. Can anyone offer me any suggestions?

Note - I disconnected TiVo and connected a Panasonic DVD recorder using the same wiring that I used for TiVo and I do have audio on the AV setting with this equipment.

Thank You in advance.

By Samsung AV Component Adapter do you mean something that takes component video (red, green, and blue RCA plugs) and stereo audio (red and white RCA plugs) and turns it all into HDMI?

Hi unitron,

I'm using the yellow, red, and white so I believe it takes it only to 480i. There is a 2 prong jack on side that plugs into the TV. The other has 5 wires to allow either a component connection (red, blue, green) or an RCA plug connection (red, white yellow). The audio connection is the same wire for either set up.

Thanks for following up,

So that 2 prong thing is an HDMI plug?

Does your TV have any inputs other than HDMI?

There is a DVI Audio In which I just tried but that made didn't work. In fact when I used that besides losing audio I also lost the TiVo sound effects.

There is also a USB port.

If the Panasonic DVD works with the original Tivo wirinng, I would suspect the Tivo lost it's audio output going to the red/white jacks.
To test for that, you should hook up the Tivo to another TV to confirm or refute that assumption.

Hi Jerry,

I tried two things: a component hook-up to the Samsung HD but no sound and I hooked the TiVo up to the original (non-HD) TV that it was hooked up to for almost 7 years and no sound.

By no sound I mean no TV or recorded sound but the TiVo sounds (clicks, cartoon when rebooting, etc.) are heard on both TVs.

If you have the sounds the TiVo itself makes/produces, but no television show audio, even on live TV, that sounds like whatever converts digital to analog audio is working, but what converts incoming audio to the digital form in which the TiVo stores it on the hard drive isn't working.

Hi unitron,

Is there anything that I can try (i.e. kickstart)?

If I'm right about what's wrong, probably not, as rearranging software will not cure a hardware failure.

Of course, I could be wrong and the hardware is still okay, but the software running the hardware has problems, in which case you could try KS 58, on the theory that at least it won't hurt anything.

And there's the outside chance that, as with other weird symptoms, it's your power supply going bad, which would almost certainly be due to one or more bad capacitors.

Search my posts for the word capacitor.

If you have tivo sounds but no tv sounds, you have the tivo in dolby digital mode. you need to turn this off to get 2 channel mode.

Does the Humax do Dolby?

Shamilan,

Thanks for responding. Before writing to the group I did go through every audio setting and tried different configurations but nothing worked. I even went through this again when I hooked the TiVo back up to my old TV.

unitron,

Yes, it does but as I stated to shamilan, I did try all of the different audio settings and nothing worked. I believe you nailed down the problem.
