S3 with HD Antenna

1820 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Bierboy
I'm looking to get the Series 3 and hook up a High-Def Antenna and have a few questions.

Will this allow me to record two shows at once?
Is the reception for these Antennas good or is it like rabbit ears?

I'm in a house and will have an indoor antenna - probably the $29.99 model on Tivo's website.

I do not plan on having any other input - just regular free over the air goodness.

I use my S3 on a outdoor TV Antenna only. I can record 2 HDTV channels at the same time & watch a 3rd on the ATSC tuner built-in on my Sony TV. The TIVO quality comparison is the same as the TV tuner. I gave up cable & satellite a while back because I don't want to pay for something that is already free.

There is no such thing as a "High-Def Antenna".

Digital OTA uses the same kind of antenna as Analog. You don't need a special antenna, there is absolutely no difference.

If someone is trying to sell you an "HD Antenna" they are ripping you off.

Preach it. I can't believe the marketing strategies used by what I used to think were reputable antenna manufacturers. Even the big three, Antennacraft, Channel Master and Winegard, are resorting to that buffoonery.
There is already an old school antenna attached to the roof of my house. It is the metal kind that has one line with a bunch of lines coming out of it like this:

Will that guy work?

Look on your television - or on the manual that came with it. Does it say HDTV, or does it say HDTV ready??

If it's an HDTV it should have an antenna connection, and be ready for an OTA HD signal. The antenna you show is identical to the one I use for my TV and S3 and I get something like 20 free HD channels (maybe more, it's changing all the time). There is no reason to buy anthing else if its worked for you in the past for regular analog channels.
If you're in Dallas, you should have no problem getting several HD over-the-air stations. You should check this thread on Dallas HD reception.

Yes, that will work perfectly.

I'm sorry, but there's no such thing as an "HD antenna".

I have it on good authority. :p

I wouldn't be so positive that antenna will work. In addition to checking the Web site I suggested above, I'd also suggest plugging your zip code into this site. That'll list the stations you should receive and recommended antennae.

He lives in Dallas, why do you think a large rooftop antenna won't work??

Antennaweb isn't always accurate. He already has the antenna on the roof, plug it in an do a scan.

That's a somewhat directional antenna, and it would depend on whether all the stations are in one direction from his location. I understand AntennaWeb is not always accurate, but that's generally in the type of antenna it recommends. Where it IS pretty accurate is in the location of the transmitting towers from your location.
