Is there a comparison chart somewhere showing the differences between S3 and the new HD box?

thanks! could not find it by search.
I was in the same boat as you were about a week ago. I decided on the S3 and am loving it so far. The tivo remote reacts faster than the S2, standard definition picture is also noticeably better. Won't get a chance to watch HD till thursday when the comcast installer puts in the cable cards, but I was assured that they will be Motorola ones. Never used a THD, but went the S3 route to be safe and love it so far.
Hmmmmm. Can't see why the huge price difference. THX - who cares. Other issues will be (or can be) ironed out shortly by Tivo updates and/or by user-installed upgrades (esata already cracked). I'm only considering the HD box because the Comcast Moto box is a POS (actually the hardware is OK, it's the firmware that is the POS). If I can upgrade the HD to a 500G drive it would be a much better system in all regards. Comcast claims they will have a Tivo-like firmware offering by 2008 (when pigs start flying).

You should be able to get some of the in-the-clear QAM channels without the cable cards.

My money is on the pigs flying first. :p
thanks, i forgot about that... i used the qam tuner in my tv for a day before getting fed up with it, as comcast makes it quite difficult, but i will give it a shot!

and all your basic 1-99 analog channels too, didn't realize that until the night before my install doh.
for some reason the HD channels did not show up in HD when I used the tuner... they looked digital but not HD, and sunday night football should have been in HD, right? well, this will all be over thursday when the tech comes from comcast.

For some reason, the person on the phone from comcast was EXTREMELY nice. It was rare, as in the past they have provided me with nothing of value. Maybe they are getting the picture that there are other service providers (albeit not cable) in the area...

Don't expect any analog channels in stereo from the TiVoHD. It has a bug where it will only output a mono signal in the LF and LR from Analog channels that should be in stereo.

Ah, that explains the why the audio doesn't sound as good coming from my THD. Any idea when this will be fixed?

I just setup my hd tivo with charter and am waiting for the cable cards next week. How do I figure out which hd channels are in the clear?

Hopefully by now they've learned what is stereo and mono. When I was talking with them it seemed like since it came out of both channels they assumed it was stereo which it isn't. The TiVoHD just puts out a duplicate signal in the L and R channels from the Analog channels. I need to call them tomorrow and see what they say since it's been a few weeks. They didn't seem to have any understanding between stereo and mono, at least thats what it seemd like with the techs I talked with. Heck I had to exchange a perfectly good TiVoHD to get on ethat hadn't been opened just so they would look at the problem. I just know everyone I've looked at has had the same problem and they need to understand that it's not a stereo(Ie. two distinct signals for each channel, not one signal duplicated for each one) signal coming from the stereo analog channels.

Of course by the time they fix it I'll probably have FIOS TV on my TiVo HD by then so it won't matter any more.

Did you actually talk to someone in engineering? I suspect you just talked to a level 2 CSR and not a real engineer. I'd be very surprised if you got someone in engineering that doesn't understand the difference between stereo and mono output.

The people I talked to said they had test setups in their lab. If they were a CSR then they lied and said otherwise. I know I talked with a CSRs, and a supervisor before being handed off to the people who said they were techs. Who knows. I just know I spent a very long time on the phone mutiple times over several days with no results to show for it. Except them making me replace a perfectly good TiVoHD that I had upgraded for a TiVoHD that wasn't upgraded. I guess they red flag the box once you upgrade the hard drive. Of course my problems had absolutly nothing to do with any hard drive and wasted a perfectly good TiVoHD and has so far wasted my time. When I get FIOS TV I will try out FIOS TV on the TiVO HD so at least I can use it for the SD channels since it will be recorded from digital channels from FIOS. At least I hope it is. I can't use it with a mono signal from the TiVo since it sounds like crap when it isn't in surround sound.

What do you expect? It's not a THX certified device :D

And it's funny you mention that. One of the people I talked to at TiVo made that comment. :(

If only that were funny and not so sad...
