S3 Newb has some questions

1024 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  DingoAce10
Hi All,
Have had my S3 set up for about 4 days now and LOVE it so far! Way better than the POS Verizon FIOS DVR!
CableCard installation went pretty smooth, except the tech was an idiot...Why they have to do it I don't know...I can make the phone can to activate the card! I guess it is to charge me the $25 installation fee!

Otherwise, got some (VERY) Newb questions, so please bare with me:

-Where is the 30 skip button on the remote? All I see is the >| button which skips to the end of the program...Or is that the button and I have to set it up some where...Where do I do that?

-Is there a descrete code for putting the Tivo on "standby" (since that is really the only why to turn it off).

-Is there any way to put the the "channel banner" on the bottom of the screen when you change channels? I am just used to it that way and I really don't like that it covers the top of the screen...No biggie just wondering.

-I just got software version 8.3 yesterday...Do i need to reboot or something or is it all set?

-Is there any way to display the channel number in the LED display on the front of the tivo?

-Is there any way to have the tivo switch channels without pressing the enter button? like I put in 808 and I want it to automatically switch...I can understand if it allows 4 digits and that is why I have to press enter.

Thanks very much in advance!

I do not have an answer to your direct question but if you are thinking that will cause less "wear" on your hard drive don't bother. The S3 will constantly be recording the 30 minute buffers of any recordable channels it happens to be tuned to, even if set to standby. It only has value if for some reason you need to turn off output to your TV.

There is also the value that your S3 won't switch channels to handle those Emergency Alert Messages if it is in standby.
Ok, now what are the "Emergency Alert Messages"? again...NEWB :)
forget it I found out what the Emergency Alert Messages are

(Dunno, I don't use it.)

No.

Nope.

If you got the "you got a software update" message, then the Tivo has already restarted and you are good to go.

Not sure, never seen anyone ask that one before.

You don't need to hit enter. Just enter the channel you want and wait a couple of seconds. Once the Tivo is sure that you aren't just entering a longer channel number very slowly, it will jump.

You can't change the location of the channel banner but you can change it's size and the amount of information displayed by pressing the right arrow(cursor?). It will toggle thru three different sizes.

For the 30 sec skip press Select Play Select 3 0 Select. You should get a confirmation beep. Now the ->| button will do the 30 sec skip.
Thanks Revolutionary!

I actually just found the 30 sec skip hack:

******************************
Bring up any recorded program or Live TV. Then, enter the following sequence on your remote:

Select → Play → Select → 3 → 0 → Select

You'll know the combination worked when TiVo rings out three Thumbs Up sounds—that chiming "bling!" sound TiVo makes when you press the button on your remote control. Your button will now skip forward by 30 seconds.

**************************************************

I loved this feature with the cable DVRs, but was missing it with Tivo...but was willing to over look it since Tivo is SO much better

I have a harmony 880 remote and there are codes that put it into standby for this remote. There are some other codes that aren't on the bone remote too. Like a button to go straight to the 'now playing' list. Unfortunately this doesn't really help you unless you have a Logitech remote. But the codes do exist.

Why do it? Well, it does turn off the stupid green LED. Now if I could get it to stay off when it comes back from standby.... One of these days I'm going to take the bezel apart and clip some wire. And while I'm at it, clip the wire to the "format" button as well. The kids won't leave it alone.
thanks HastyPete!
Well my neighbor has the LogicTech Harmony 1000 (the LCD remote) and I have the Pronto 3000 so if he has the codes I could just "learn them" from him (in theory).

I will give that a shot! I like that you can go right to "Now Playing" cause I am used to having the "My DVR" area with verizon and Comcast...That would be nice to put that back :)

I will call him and see if he can add Tivo to his system for me.

Thanks!
