I have tried transfers using Tivo Desktop (I have Tivo2Go but haven't transferred anything yet). The transfers were from a S3HD connected via ethernet cable through a router and an ethernet switch. Bottom line: the transfer took at least real-time to complete. Interestingly, I have done wireless G transfers from one Tivo to another and they go pretty much in real-time. My guess would be that the processing power of the Tivo is the main speed limiting factor. It seems that the transfers are much like the "Copy to VCR" function on old Tivos in that it all goes at real-time.I know this has been discussed a lot, but the threads are old and a little conflicting, so in hopes the answer is more definitive these days, I'm wondering how I can get my old tivo transferring files the fastest it possibly can. Using your calculations for the HD, that works out to about 142 minutes for one of the 2-hour movies I transferred from my HD (10.9 GB). That's about what I saw - not even real-time. (Intel 2.4 Ghz, dual-core, 4 GB RAM, Windows 7)Takes forever is relative?
I have the Tivo S2 540040 which I believe is reported to have the weakest processor of all the Tivo branded S2 units. It is hardwired via a linksys usb 200M usb 2.0 adapter to a Zyxel wireless G and 100 GB wired router.
To transfer an exactly 500 MB show it takes just about 19 1/2 mintes to a Dell 2.2 GH core 2 duo computer with an old Buffalo wireless G adapter.
I also have an old Celeron 4 2.4 GH computer hardwired to the above router and it takes about the same 19 1/2 minutes for an all hardwired ethernet transfer.
Just for reference, on my S2DT unit the same show takes 8 1/2 minutes.
On my Tivo HD, the same show takes 6 1/2 minutes.
Yes, my Tivo HD does about 4 GB/hr with my set up. Better than forever though. And I still chose not to subscribe a Premiere. Check Craigslist, both local and otherwise (offer 'em PayPal and the cost of shipping), you might get one for about $20 or $30 or you might find one included with what you could keep as a parts machine.Thanks everybody.
