S1 --> S3 Changes

Okay, I'm moving from being primarily an S1 person (StandAlone and DirecTiVo) .. to using an S3 (THD) as my main box. (And yes, I've used some S2 boxes from time to time).. I fully understand that things change as new features get added .. but what I was hoping to discuss in this thread would be example of changes/subtractions that you've noticed that seem to make no sense and you'd like put back in.

I'll start out with a simple one .. On the DirecTiVo if you wanted to swap between tuners on LiveTV you could hit the down arrow. Now you have to hit "Live TV" (which has actually had some glitches .. but that's not the point here). Currently a "down arrow" does nothing. Why not just keep the former functionality? It was convenient, and it wouldn't hurt anything to go back in.

Looking at the Guide Grid .. in standard format there are two columns .. if you want to change programs .. you hit select on the program on the left side .. if you select a program on the right side it goes into recording mode. Under S1 .. if you were on the right side and on the program that matches the "live time" (i.e. currently playing .. or possibly 5 minutes prior to playing) .. you could hit the "right arrow" or "select" on it and go right to it. Perhaps its a preference thing for the GUI, but if I'm navigating the guide at :45 and I'm seeing what's on another channel .. seems reasonable that I don't want to record the current showing .. and that I'd rather go to it. Thoughts on this one?

Came across another change last night that actually annoyed me ... Had a baseball game buffered on lets say Tuner1 .. and a suggestion started going on Tuner2 ... Paused the game, checked out what was recording ... knew I didn't care about it ... decided to change that channel to something else. Punched in a new channel ... sort of noticed that the red light was still on ... Paused new channel .. attempted to go back to the baseball game .. and there was the suggestion still recording. Under the S1 code, the suggestion is considered a non-protected recording .. and it would have just changed off of it. Now it seems that it will hold onto the suggestion unless you go into Now Playing and cancel it. Unfortunately, in this case .. I lost the buffer on the game. (I'll live). But what's odd is it just went ahead and changed me to Tuner1 .. no alert .. no nothing .. seems VERY odd to me to protect a suggestion recording like that.

So, what else has changed that you folks want to grumble about? What codes/options have vanished that could just as easily still be there? (Hey, I still grumble out TeachTiVo going away.. but that was a long long time ago).

Maybe we can get some good info .. and maybe some good explanations as to why things have changed. (oh, and I realize that some/all of these could have been S2 changes .. I'm not blaming anything on S3 .. but since they are there, and I'm there .. I'm just ignoring whether or not they've been around since s2 or not)

Hope to hear from you all.

If you've got a Tivo Series3, make sure it's on 8.3.x. See the System Information screen.

Some minor usability changes were made between 8.0.x (original software), 8.1.x, and the current 8.3.x.

Hmm.. not exactly what I was shooting for in the discussion ... but what changes are you talking about (and personally I'm talking about a THD .. which isn't up to 8.3 ..yet) what can I expect to see?

I just was just forced to move from my HD DIrecTivo to a Tivo HD with cable card (new house has many many trees). I alsonoticed these annoying UI problems you mentioned. The down arrow one is really going to take some getting used to. Much easier to hit that button without looking than to hit the live tv to do it. Plus, I'm used to it and it should just work still since down arrow has no function right now.
I currently own a Sony SVR3000 Series 2, and used to own a Sony SVR2000 Series 1, and they both have a couple of things that seem so simple, yet missing from both my Humax 300 hr and my new TiVo HD: a standby button, and a LIST button that takes you directly to the Now Playing List.

OTOH both remotes (actually they both use the same RMT-V303 remote) don't have a TV input button like the TiVo peanut remote does.
Only one change that bugs me so far:

When searching for a show, you used to be able to Page Down (or Up) to jump directly from the alphabet grid to the shows list. Now I have to use the right arrow to move over to the list, which takes several more seconds since the UI on my THD is a bit slow.
I still miss the List button from my original Sony Series 1.

Damn, I got my new TiVo HD yesterday and this one bugged me. :( I would love to see this functionality rolled back in.
I too just noticed this. THIS SUCKS! I've been using my DirecTivo's with RF remotes. I don't have a spare button that's "as convenient" to use as the down arrow. Since the S3 can't be easily hacked is there a secret code sequence that'll provide this?
Here's another vote to bring back the Now Playing button like our Sony Series 1 has.

Yea, it would be nice to have the List button on the tivo remote. I had forgotten that such a command existed until I got the Harmony remote 688 and it has the list action as one of the action buttons. I know use the harmony remote instead of the Tivo remote and use the list button a lot to access the NPL instantly.

Ok, I can see if you are used to using the down arrow to switch tuners it could take some time to get used to using the Live Tv button however, other than that, I am not sure what difference it makes if you use the Live TV or the down arrow. I never had a directTivo and so I don't know anything about them, but since having the Series 3, I have not had any problems in using the Live Tv to switch tunners. I actually think it make sense that the Live Tv would switch tunners since if you are watching a Live Tv you would think pressing Live Tv again would switch to the next Live Tv show which would be on the other tunner. I am not disagreeing with you or anything just trying to determine if there was any reason to change it other than being used to using the down button to switch tunners?

I have a DirecTiVo and a TiVo HD, so I have to use a different way to switch tuners on each box. Many times I have instinctively hit the LiveTV button on the DirecTiVo and have the guide pop up instead of switching tuners. I also have the opposite problem on my TiVo HD with the down arrow.

I would be satisfied if both boxes switched tuners the same way, although the down arrow would be my preference since that's how I've been swapping tuners for the last few years.

Me too. It's presenting a real problem for us in making the transition from DirecTV to FIOS. The universal remotes we're using do not have a convenient way to map a button solely for this purpose. It's a shame they just don't use the down arrow, or at least support it along with the LiveTV button.
