My Toshiba RS-TX20 can't play any DVD-ROM movie disk(Bought from store or borrowed from blockbuster),no matter DVD-5(single layer) or DVD-9(double-layer) disk. But it really can play any DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW movie, also it can burn DVD-R/RW without any problem.I really don't know why???
Anyone got same issue ? any suggestion/idea?
Thank for your time!!!

You might have a bad DVD drive in there ... how old is it? Can you possibly return it and get a new one? Or maybe a disc cleaner to clean the lens?

I've only had one problem when my Toshiba didn't recognize a disc and it was because the "Fantastic Four" DVD from Blockbuster was filthy. Once I cleaned it up, the TX20 played it just fine.
Thanks for your reply,so far I can't return it, today I tried a laser lens clean disk,no luck:-(

I am really wonder:how come all the DVD-R/RW backup disk can be play but
nomal DVD-ROM always display "invalid disk or unsopport format"?
I'm by no means a DVD expert, but I want to say a different laser type/wavelength is used to read commercial DVDs vs. DVD-R/RW discs. So maybe your unit is having problems with the laser used for the commercial discs.

Again, I'm way out on a limb here.

Have you tried calling TiVo or Toshiba support?
All DVDs - DVD-ROM, R/RW, etc - use exactly the same laser and read/write head. So that isn't it.

I didn't mean to imply there were different physical heads ... I was just wondering if it had something to do with the frequency used.

But again, I'm not the expert, so I'll just be quiet before I look more ridiculous. :)

Nope, that's why I said 'same laser'. 650nm wavelength for all DVDs.
