Roamio Plus Fan Speed Control

I have a Roamio Plus bought new from Weaknees almost seven years ago with the HDD upgraded to 3TB. I just upgraded to 8TB using posts here, worked like a charm. While I had the case open, decided to replace the still-working fan since it was probably due for a new one anyway.

My research on which new fan to buy led to considerable confusion. Can anybody explain how (if) the mobo on a Roamio Plus does fan speed control? It’s a 2-pin header which means the mobo controls fan speed by varying the voltage it supplies, correct? Or is the fan supposed to be always on with a constant speed? If it was a 3-pin (3-wire), that 3rd wire’s purpose is to inform the mobo what speed the fan was spinning but that’s not in use here.

My ultimate goal is to identify a high-quality (high-performance) replacement fan. Cool temps are more important than avoiding noise. As a side issue, I wonder if I’m limited in buying a new fan that was built as 2-pin, or if there’s a better 3-pin fan for my needs that I can use or adapt. I tried a good 3-pin fan and sometimes it wouldn’t start at all and sometimes it was on constantly but at an unacceptably-low RPM. Thanks.

fwiw, Weaknees sells a replacement fan for $30 on Amazon that looks like the original. I had tried an alternate fan after my last HD upgrade and it died an early death.

Yeah, was aware of that, thx. Not necessarily looking to get an actual OEM replacement fan or one that even seems very similar. Was looking to get the "best" fan that would work straightaway or could be made to work with some pin/wiring modifications, but to work on that idea I first have to have an understanding of how the mobo does fan speed control (or IF it does fan speed control). Surely there are other fans out there that move more CFM, etc.

Just sharing my experience. I tried to find a quieter/cheaper fan based on suggestions from the forums and it died an early death. and ended up back with the a CoFan replacement.
This was a popular topic a while back: Bolt noisy fan - options?
