My Roamio was making enough noise that someone I talked to by calling the 800 number said I should probably replace it. But it has had few problems.

Yesterday there were two visible consequences after lightning. My desktop's screen it up just as the lightning happened, and while I normally turn it on by hitting a key, I had to push the on button. No problems.

And my Series 3 quit working. Probably not a coincidence since the surge protector (if that's what it was) was really old. Other appliances were not affected.

I don't know if this is related but my Roamio doesn't make those noises any more.

The noise and now the lack of it could mean that the fan was going bad and has now failed. Using it without a working fan will cause it to run hot and ultimately fail completely due to processor overheating. Replacing the fan is not difficult at all and you can buy a replacement from weaknees here: TiVo Replacement Fans - Keep your TiVo Running Cool!
