Hello all, I decided to replace the hard disk in my Roamio OTA after a few times the box stalled in starting after some power outages. I purchased a 3TB WD Red.

I put the drive in but the unit would not start. Four lights flashing after a bit. I could hear the hard disk trying to spin up over and over again. I thought maybe I got a bad drive. I put the new drive in a PC and it spun up fine.

Tried again in the unit, but nothing happens now. The lights all still flash. The fan inside does not spin up (not sure if that's normal)

I tested the AC adapter, I'm getting 12v and 1.5 amps. I'm not sure if that is normal, it says it's rated for 2amps.

Any suggestions?

What is the exact model of the new drive? The big difference is that SMR drives will not work, only CMR. So it must be WD Red Plus WD30EFRX would be what you would be looking for on a 3TB.

You would need to replace the power supply, 1.5 amps is too low even if its a 2 amp. Need a 3amp. The plug is 2.1mm inside positive X 5.5mm outside.

Update, I was suspecting the AC adapter so I tried one I found that was rated for 3amps.
The hard disk is now spinning up, and I have the welcome video output.

How long do I need to wait before the system finishes initializing everything?

Normal bootup/startup is 3 min. A little longer for a new drive swap in.

It may. CMR, 5400 RPM, just not 100% sure.

Thanks. I put my old hard disk back in and the unit is booting normally.
I will return the SMR drive and get a CMR.
I attempted to using my usual disk cloning tool (Acronis) to clone the disk but it was seeing the source disk as uninitialized.
What's the suggested way to clone the 500GB drive to the 3TB?

If you do not mind losing everything from the old OEM drive, you can just swap out for the new Red Plus and Roamio will setup as a new fresh unit. Otherwise, Get MFSTools 3.3 and make a bootable CD, copying will also expand the new space. You can connect by SATA or USB2 (slower) or USB3. The process can take a full day or more.

Cloning the 500gb to a 3TB is just a copy, so it would still be 500gb even though the drive is 3tb.

Does anyone know if you pull your old drive out and drop in the new drive and after TIVO sets up the new drive, can you plug in the old drive externally via one of those USB drive holders and access your old recordings on the old drive?
No, it does not work that way.

Aww, that's too bad it can't read the OG drive if hooked up externally. Oh, well.
If you want to "try" to keep the recordings, you would have to do a data recovery attempt to a new drive and hope that it does not carry the problem with the old drive. There are a LOT of pages here to digest, but this is the place: MFS Tools 3.2
