The problem is... this is an attitude that ALL the networks are starting to share...
If the show simply doesn't pull in RECORD raitings during it's premier or with in like 2 or three week... and hole cow if just ONE publication writer doesn't like the show...
Bye Bye....
I mean if this was the case 10,15,20 years ago...
We would not have had Raymond (as it was vote the best show no one is watching)
We would not have had Seinfield (Season 1 got crap ratings)
We would not have had Cosby
We would not have had Friends (Season 1 didn't get blockbuster raitings)
Shows like 7th Heaven (not that it is for me... but heck what it is on it's 10 year now, and had to be "re-born" playing new episodes along with re-packaged re-runs)
Even 24, it had to be "marathonded" 6 weeks into the series, so that people could "catchup" as they where just now finding out how good of a show it was.
Nothing is given a chance any more.
With all the big 4 networks, having no less then 2 "daughter" networks (such as NBC->Bravo, USA; Fox-> F/X, Fox Family; ABC -> ABC Family, any Disney Network; CBS-> Crap the entire Viacom universe)
If it don't cut it for the PRIME 4 networks, move it to a Cable network and let it get some feet.. leave it there or bring it back to the PRIME 4 after all the characters are developed and the writers have sunk their teeth into and got a good grip on what the show should be..
Also.. Neislen has to pony up and get with the times....
DVRs are growing in big numbers, and they have to adjust the raiting system accordingly.
Also with 200+ channels, numbers that where big in the 60's (when there where what 3 channels), simply don't translate to today...
If you look at the Cable Co, you have basically 10 channels or so with "primetime" programming now adays.. .some are not the full 3 hours, but there are "series" shows ever not.
