What brand and model of adapter and who did you buy it from?
Look at badcaps.net and look at wikipedia's article on "capacitor plague" and then inspect the capacitors in your power supply.
Restarts- Lots of em
I have two Directv TiVos. An R10 and a DSR704. The 704 got a new hard drive in August and the R10 a couple weeks ago. The R10 wouldn't get past the Welcome screen so I ordered a power supply. Turned out the adapter that came with the drive was faulty. But both machines are expierencing lots of restarts. I just had 4 in an hour on the 704 so I started watching the R10 and it restarted (Twice now within 20 minutes). It's really getting annoying. I don't know if I should spent $70 on a power supply for the 704 or what. The only other thought I had was putting surge protectors on them. I thought maybe a power spike might have something to do with it but it's just a thought. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm quite the tv junkie and this is really harshing my mellow.

Since I had my first DirecTiVo I've been buying parts from Weaknees. The DSR704 I bought from them and the replacement hard drive for it too. The R10 I don't remember where I got it but this is the third drive I've gotten from Weaknees. The adapters for both came from them. The newer drives have the very skinny connector and the adapter plugs into it and the old style cabling plugs into that. The power supply for the R10 was from them too. In the last few days the restarts seem to have slowed down on both machines but they both freeze a couple times a day which means I have to do a restart and that takes a little life off the drive. While I had them apart I searched around for blown caps and couldn't see any. Everything looked normal. There have been times in the past that I've experienced things like this but I don't think I've seen that kind of restart issue. I'm hoping it is starting to calm down now.
I know it's just a conspirator's theory but there have been times I've been recording the same show on both machines and had them freeze or restart at the exact same second. How is it possible for two different machines that have been in service for different amounts of time drop the ball at the exact same second? Makes me think it's something Directv does to try to get people to upgrade. A friend has a machine that is still on software 4.something something and never has problems. Strange.

Like either something in the satellite data stream that chokes them, or, not having both machines and all of your other electronics on uninterruptable power supplies.
