Hey peoples,

It's good to finally be a part of a community that has a smiley IN THE LOGO :) that just makes me feel good to see on my slick little box in the entertainment rack now ;)

So, I finally made the switch. It was inevitable as Replay kept taking $$ but quit making units. NO HD? No more $$ from me!

So, I've hooked up the shiny new sliver/black TivoHD from the Amazon dealio. Pretty excited to get all of my programming on ONE unit in ONE evening for ONE low price. Versus the TWO replay's I've got networked right now. HOWEVER, it appears that I won't be getting quite that yet.

I can't get the st00pid Tivo to pickup any of MY HD channels! It picks up random "channels" far, far up in the lineup, but NONE of the local stuff that I get w/ my TV's regular QAM tuner. BOTH signals come off of the very same line.

help? I thought that this thing HAD A QAM tuner? Was I wrong?

EDIT: So Insight says their CableCARD will "blow up" my Tivo - so it's not "compatible" w/ their service... hello? Anyone have THAT Crap w/ Insight? I'm in Louisville.

I'm in Louisville

typically I get CBS, ABC, NBC, KET1-4 & some other station I can't remember...
Have you ran a channel scan? Tivo Central->Messages&Settings->Settings->Channels->Channel Scan
Even assuming it can/does find unencrypted QAM channels it won't be much use since there will be no guide listings for those and therefore you will have a glorified VCR capable of manual recordings only. You have to use CableCards to get proper guide listings for all the digital channels - Tivo has not committed to any kind of support for unencrypted QAM without CableCards. Search for "unencrypted QAM" for all the gory details if you like but the chances are slim to nil Tivo will ever support it unfortunately.
so, does the series 3 (NOT TivoHD, but Tivo Series 3) map QAM to guide? b/c I'm still w/in my 30 days and that feature is like critical isn't it?

It does if you install CableCards, otherwise no.
so others have had major issues getting Insight to issue the CableCARD for these as well? I just had customer service tell me how their cards do NOT work with Tivo. "Yeah, they actually blow them up and then we have to pay for them."

anyone?

Tanner,

There are two different CableCARD "Systems" Motorola or Scientific Atlanta. Which one is used depends upon the "system" for Conditional Access (CA) chosen by the Carrier and the equipment installed on their network and headend to provide Conditional Access video.

There is no technical reason that I can think of that either should not work in a TiVo HD or S3 device, as both are CableLabs CableCARD certified devices.

If Insight is giving you grief over CableCARDs, I would suggest you need to escalate (and keep escalating) until you get to someone who knows what they are talking about. SOMEONE there will understand how to pair and authenticate the cards. It's just that it can sometimes be frustrating trying to get them involved.

If you still cannot get satisfaction, check out the other CableCARD threads here, and you'll find many anecdotes. One solution is to remind the carrier that they are obligated to provide the card(s) per FCC regulations. If they still don't comply, file a complaint with the FCC.

Finally, there is a special phone number/contact info at TiVo to help get the operator get you up and running...

I was the first one to use Tivo Series 3 on Insight (I had the S3 over nighted the instant it came out). A couple techs came over to do the install using Motorola cable cards. It was the first time they had ever used cable cards. They called their boss, and once he heard I had a S3, he came over to play with it. They activated no problem. They work fine.

tivo works with all cable cards, its certified by the cablecard labs. its possibly an issue with your cableco's card type. some systems use an older type that uses a powerkey. i don't know all the details, but a cable tech told me my system (cablevision woodbury, ny) uses the new type NDS card, which is way better than the older powerkey type

Please keep in mind that CableCARD is neither Powerkey nor NDS which are other security key based systems (one-way and two-way) that have been implemented to enable the decoding of the digital streams in systems.

PS: Follow Barry's advice above and beat them over the head with FCC regulation until they submit and give you the damn CableCARD.
Seconded. They seriously said "it will blow it up"? That sounds like a "we don't feel like dealing with it, so we're just going to brush you off" response if I ever heard one. I know there's a thread about Insight Cable customers and their experiences; might check that one out and see what you can glean there. Some seemed to have no troubles getting the cards, others ranged from minor to near-fight. However, be *very* insistent; ask for a supervisor/manager; if you aren't getting satisfaction, go to the FCC web site and file a complaint. Seriously, it works - it'll probably take about a month, but they'll pay attention when that complaint letter arrives.

Edit: This one.
sounds like I'll be having a tech out tomorrow (who knows how many cards he'll bring) As the Customer "service" rep told me, "we don't have multi-line cards," to which I'm thinking have you EVER read the manual for your own friggin' job? ;) Anyway, we'll see tomorrow & I'll update here.
tech arrived w/in time frame
came w/ the explosive device (CableCARD)
single line only, despite my request for the TEN TV's worth of cards.
had no idea how to set it up, but allowed me to show him the tivo site w/ the setup instructions.

rocked it out

s card working.
M card coming tomorrow.
