We've got two SD DVRs, one of which died. Looking to the future, I thought it might be worthwhile to replace the deceased one with a new HD DVR. I called DirecTV and was told that I could 1) replace the dead SD DVR for the cost of shipping only, or 2) replace it with an HD DVR for $299. As a 5+ year subscriber, I'd like to think I can do better. Or am I being unreasonable?

I had heard on the other forum that the "deals" are not as easy to find now that they have released the new HD channels.

I was able to upgrade mine for $99 in August, but I also had the HD (HR10-250) version. It could be it's $299 because of the SD versions of the boxes you have now.

my online account use to have in the "Upgrade Equipment" section, the HD DVR for $299 with a $100 instant credit for being a "preferred" customer, but it no longer gives that price.

It is $299 to upgrade to the HR20.

Of course I just added one about 2 months ago, but it was still offering that deal when I checked after the new HR20 was added so maybe they know that these new HD channels are tempting a lot of new subscribers and they no longer need to offer any deal.

Unfortunately I think Scooby is correct. You might have some leverage if you had the HR10 but it sounds like they are willing to swap you out even for a SD DVR. You may want to call back and talk to retention and see if you can get a better deal. However it does appear that Directv has really started to curtail the discounts and almost eliminated freebies.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I think I'll try one more spin of the CSR roulette wheel and, if I can't do any better, I'll take the replacement SD DVR. Then, in about a year when my present commitment is due to expire, I'll see if they're interested in retaining a loyal subscriber or letting me bail for a better competing offer. Thanks again!

If they won't come down off the $299 price then ask about credits. You might be able to score a $10 a month credit for 12 months = $120 off the price. If you really want to mess with them ask for retention and then say that the problem is they won't sell you an HR20 for less than $299 which you consider outragous for equipment that will be leased. Just keep trying until they give in.

Requesting a credit is a good idea, Gator... I agree that paying $299 for the privilege to lease a unit is a little out of whack. Thanks for the suggestion.

I think I'll wait a few weeks until the HR21 is well into distribution (I like the black case) and call customer service again. If unsuccessful, I'll take the replacement SD unit and try again when my commitment is about fulfilled. I'll post with my successful or failed experience.
