Renaming the Original "S3"

Nope, you are certainly not. That's what people having been using, but some people are using the two interchangably sometimes and it's confusing.

I've seen a number of posts as "S3 TiVOHD"...of course, I assume it's a TiVOHD, but here lies the confusion, particularily for new owners, new to TiVO.

A Series 3 TiVo is a Tivo HD unit.
The TiVoHD is a Series 3.

Wouldn't this be easier.

An S3O TiVo is a TiVo HD unit.
The TiVoHD is a Series 3 TiVo, but it's not the
The S3O (or whatever better ancronym fits) is a Series 3 TiVo, and it's the original and first released Series 3.

You're probably right, it's probably not worth trying to convince others to change learned behavior over these past two weeks.

A simple clarification by TiVo would help and people would change....whether TiVo wants to do this or not is really their matter. I think it would help.

Well, its clear on the Tivo website that the nomenclature is:

TiVoHD DVR.
TiVo Series 3 HD DVR.

Honestly, I think they wanted a buzz name for the new box, and whats better than ultra-simple: TiVoHD. And they never bothered to rename the first box. Clearly, they are both based on the Series 3 platform.

This is how I would name it:
(Series 3) TiVoHD
(Series 3) Ultimate TiVoHD (or Series 3 Premium TiVoHD).

Or you just name it by the number of hours:
(Series 3) TiVoHD 180 hr DVR.
(Series 3) TiVoHD 300 hr DVR.

I put "Series 3" in parentheses because it could be dropped altogether. The public doesn't know what "Series 3" really means and all they care about is the DVR is built for HD. Therefore, I think it makes logical sense for TiVo to drop the "Series 3" in the name for TiVoHD in general.

We have two products.

One is named the Series 3, and is often abbreviated S3.
One is named the TivoHD, and is sometimes abbreviated THD.

And while we know the TivoHD is based on the S3, it does not contain Series 3 anywhere in it's official product name - it is not called a Series 3.

So, if one says Series 3, or S3, there is no real confusion. That refers only to the original S3 unit, no confusion there.
If one says TivoHD or THD, again, that specificly referes to one unit, the TivoHD, no confusion.
S3-Lite as a nickname seems to have stuck, so if someone says S3-Lite, they are referring to the Tivo HD.

People do sometimes get into trouble when they say they have a HD Tivo. This could refer to the S3, the TivoHD, or even a HR10-250. But that confusion existed long before the TivoHD hit the market.

The only real question is - do we want to rename the S3 forum to make it clear it includes the TivoHD?
