I'm sorry that this is such a basic question; perhaps because it IS so basic, I can't find a straight-forward answer anywhere else.

I just bought the 40 hour Series 2 Tivo box. Is it possible for me to record more than one thing at the same time?

No.

Standalone boxes only record one show at a time.

The combo boxes (directivo and DirecTv DVR's) can record 2 shows (dual tuners) while you watch something already recorded.

You can record one program while simultaneously downloading another over the Internet (such as Rocketboom).
