This has happened twice in the past week and it is mucking with my life.

A three hour recording kicks off according to a Season Pass.
30 or 40 minutes in, the recording stops.
When I go to play back, the green bar starts from 0 and goes to 30 minutes, then it ends.
The remaining 2.5 hours is blank.

Today I caught this happening about 1.5 hours in. I went into live TV. The show was broadcasting nicely. When I pushed Record, it resumed recording plus the 30 minute buffer.

Another 3 hour show, starting at the same time on another channel, recorded perfectly with no hiccups.

Can anybody suggest a reason this might be happening and how to cure it?

First thing to do is reboot. Second may be a signal issue, but I'm guessing a reboot might fix it.
Reboot? That's what people say when they can't think of anything else.

If it was a signal issue, wouldn't we expect the recording to have a gap, but not abort?
And, when the signal is restored, should we expect the recording to resume?

You never shared if you rebooted your TiVo. Did you?

Because it so often works.

There are processes going on that accumulate garbage; no one at Tivo has done any debugging on this kind os stuff in 15 years. If you have an itch on your arm I'd consider scratching it before scheduling surgery.

More info is needed.

Did you try a reboot?
What software version? What model?
Video source?
Do you have a tuning adapter?
Thank you for showing a sincere interest in my issue.

My DVR is a Roamio Plus with cablecard connected to Comcast
I probably reboot 3 or 4 times a month for a variety of reasons.
Typically, when a reboot interrupt a recording, the recording resumes in a new file after the boot is completed.
The issue that I"m suffering is different. It stopped for no reason and never resumed.

* yes
** yes. But that is not my experience. I have spectrum cable with SDV.
This mostly happens with SDV channels.
Usually during an extended recording (live sporting event) and more often than not; during the early morning hours.

He doesn't say whether he has switched video but that was one of the symptoms I had. I put the tuning adapter on a timer/switch to reboot it; I think I had to set it for twice a week.

Even without switched video, if he loses signal temporarily the recording may not continue or restart with a new file (which is what it does if the recording aborted due to a spontaneous reboot). I hate to say that's normal but it's what happens.

Temporarily losing signal (especially if he has switched video) is the most likely culprit, but unfortunately there are many other possibilities, including a flaky hard drive.

It is probably time to replace that HD anyway. I upgraded it to a larger video-grade device when I bought the Roamio new, but it hasn't been touched since. I've been seeing more and more brief pixelated interruptions at playback time. I feel like those are because of bad spots on the HD.

What do you mean by "switched video"?

I have a single coax cable coming into my house. it goes to a 1-to-8 MoCa amp before it feeds the cablecard in my Roamio Plus.
SDV Switched Digital Video, if your provider used it they would require that you use a Tuning Adapter in addition to a CableCARD

I have only the CableCard.
So, it seems that I do not have SDV.

Do I want SDV?
It is really annoying that most Comcast subscribers have voice remotes and channels that I can't receive.
But, I wouldn't want to sacrifice the ability to record 6 channels at once.

you can't "want it" it's something a CableCO forces upon you if their system uses it, so the answer is "you don't have SDV"
