I'm having problems keeping the correct aspect ratio when i archive recordings from the HR10-250 to my Samsung DVD-R120. Regardless of what i set my tv on (16:9 or 4:3), the resulting recording is always 4:3. I’ve noticed this happens with both 16:9 recordings and a 4:3 recordings. The result is the picture is "squished" horizontally. I've tried everything i know to do after reading other posts on this issue. Any suggestions?

ya- did that. i did a test recording on both settings (16:9 & 4:3 on 2 different DVD’s). i recorded a minute of a show in 16:9 & a show in 4:3 on. When i replay either DVD on my tv, it works fine. So for some reason, both the 16:9 recording and the 4:3 recording look exactly the same on my 16:9 tv. However, when I put either DVD in my computer or on a 4:3 tv, everything is “squished” again.

By "squished", do you mean letterboxed?

Is the original broadcast 16:9? Your 4:3 television (and 4:3 computer monitor) would be letterboxing the signal for that aspect ratio as a 16:9 video could only fill the screen if it was being "panned and scanned".

Would there be any setting on your satellite receiver affecting what aspect ratio it outputs? I only have cable.

I apologize if I am misunderstaning you, but I think would you are describing is just the way it works when a widescreen picture is displayed on a 4:3 screen. Someone else asked a similar question awhile back, not sure what the outcome was.

Again, I apologize if I am misunderstanding your question.

sorry for the lack of clarity. My technological lingo is limited. ;)

Unfortunately, it's not letterboxing the picture. The bars are put on the right and left of the screen (I think they are called sidebars) as opposed to the top and bottom like letterbox. The result is that everything appears taller and skinnier. It does this whether the original broadcast is 16:9 or 4:3.

I tweaked the settings on my directv box and that helped with the 4:3 recordings- they looked correct on my computer and did not have the sidebars. However, I still cannot get an original 16:9 recording to stay in 16:9 when I burn it to DVD. The sidebars are added and the resulting picture is in 4:3 format.
