Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to have the feature. I appreciate the opportunity to undelete on my (unhacked, but storage upgraded) Series 3. But I'm noticing that it's not really executed very well.

My TiVo has a lot of recordings. So the "Recently Deleted" folder only has about 10-12 things. But what I am noticing is that when I watch an old recording, then delete it, it doesn't ever appear in the "Recently Deleted" folder. It's gone, immediately.

Instead, the "Recently Deleted" folder just lists shows that have recently been recorded and then been deleted. Which doesn't make sense. It's called "RECENTLY DELETED" ... not "Recently Recorded and then Deleted." I feel like this folder should list as many recent deletions as it can, in reverse order of their deletion (the most recently deleted being first.) The date any of this stuff was actually recorded shouldn't matter. I shouldn't have to be concerned with airdate; after all, that's why I have a TiVo.

Also, not nearly as much of an issue, but worth mentioning. When I undelete something, the TiVo UI should take me back to the Now Playing list, with the menu highlighting that recording. 99.9% of the time I am undeleting so I can watch it. Why make me navigate all the way back to it in the NP list, manually?

Basically, I'm mystified by things disappearing from recently deleted too.

I'm using Suggestions + recently deleted as my poor man's free space indicator, but actually lost *at least* one recording the other day(*). I had a few HOURS of recently deleted + suggestions, and absolutely definitely recorded about 1.5 hours of new recordings by the time I got home (daily show & colbert 10-11 reruns, then Jeopardy). But somehow something was deleted in the meantime. The show I *know* was deleted was a dumb reality show (as opposed to a good reality show).. but I also wonder if other stuff was deleted.

(*) I really wish there were a list of "deleted recently" shows. Basically the equivalent of recording history.. that showed me deletion history, like deleted by user, deleted to make room for new recording. Obviously the recording history only shows me the RECENT info.

Suggestions take precedence over Recently Deleted. If you don't use Suggestions, your Recently Deleted doesn't empty out until new recordings start pushing them out.

Recording history does show you "deleted recently" history... I don't understand how what you're asking for is different?

I agree with Fofer that the RD folder should be ordered by Deletion time only, not Recording time.

After reading your post, I played around with my RD. Coincidentally, I deleted some really old shows tonight (March). It appears the RD Folder is mixing two behaviors.

It appears it keeps shows in the RD Folder based on age. It holds as many as it can hold, obviously based on disk space, and as you delete a recording, if it is newer than the oldest item already in RD, it keeps it. If it's older, it goes straight to never-never land.

But then it displays the shows in the RD by date deleted. A show I deleted just now, no matter how old, will be at the top, as long as it qualifies for the RD in the first place.

This is strange behavior, as fofer's observation makes sense. RD should be RD, regardless of date recorded.

Exactly, astrohip.

So how/who do report this UI oddity to? Clearly any programming team with a clue would see our point. Does TiVo have an official avenue for requests? I'm pretty sure they don't read the Suggestions Forum here...

I am too, but IMO to have this folder in the Now Playing area is just wrong--I don't want to see it. It should either be moved, or a Setting On/Off "Show Deleted Programs"...

I am puzzled by the reports of this behavior. If you delete something it should go into the RD folder and it and everything else stay there until a current recording requires the space, which only rarely would be within a couple minutes of the deletion.

Agreed. But that's not how it works.

Funny, my wife was just complaining about this problem this morning. I deleted something last night. She wanted to watch it, so she went looking in the RD folder. But it wasn't there, instead there were 12 other recordings that were recorded more recently than the one I threw in the trash. TiVo needs to change this, it makes no sense.

This folder needs to be what was recently deleted off the Now Playing list, in order of when it was deleted.

Agreed 1000%. Otherwise don't call it "Recently Deleted" folder.

Call it "A Random Hodgepodge of Shows You've Recorded Recently and Subsequently Deleted (What You're Hoping Is Here, Probably Isn't)"

How about 'Get a Bigger HD - A-hole' Its a count down, so everytime RD hits (0) you must install a bigger HD.

Nah, the way I look at it, it shouldn't matter. The bigger your HD, the more recordings you have, the more deleted items that should be found reliably in that folder. I have a 750 GB drive. I just want some consistency, and the way the RD folder is designed right now, it doesn't make much sense. I'm curious to know, programmatically, why they did it this way.

Especially since the way TiVo is designed by default, we are more likely to watch the "older" recordings first because they ahead of the queue when it comes to auto-deletion. Why should these recordings skip the RD folder?

The whole problem lies in calling this a feature at all. If I delete something I want it gone.
LOL. Folks clamored for this feature. The "Recently Deleted" folder is there so you can undelete. For example, if I delete something by mistake. Or decide I want to recover it to show something to a friend.

Your point however, speaks to a user preference I'd like to see: to be able to turn the RD folder off. Or maybe when deleting a show there can be an option to "permanently delete" (hence, skipping the RD folder if it was eligible was temporary availability there.) That way everybody's happy, yes?

One advantage of the "feature" is there is no longer a confirmation dialog when you delete a program. Resulting in a faster interaction.

However, if deleted programs aren't reliably put into the "Recently Deleted" folder, then the lack of confirmation dialog is a problem!

The original TiVo was a wonderful idea, ahead of its time. But the early people have bailed out. Replaced by dimwits.

Actually, the day this feature showed up told you how it was implemented.

The first time my TiVo booted with the RD feature, there were already recordings in it. The implication was that the RD folder was viewing something that had been there all along. Leading one to the conclusion...

In effect, all the feature is is a folder interface dropped on top of the space reclamation cycle. The reason that oldest recordings drop out of the RD folder before the least recently deleted is because that's the way the space reclamation algorithm works -- reclaim the oldest space first, not the most recently deleted space. The only other tweak was to add a flag that said "Don't display in RD" so when you delete from the RD folder, it disappears.

Nothing was ever deleted... it was just marked as reclaimable. All RD does is let you change that state before it is actually reclaimed -- usually
