R15 vs R10

Just got my first DVR and it's an R15. Is there some comparison listing (besides record capacity) to the R10?

Not a hardcore comparison... as in feature to feature.

But on a very high level, listing things one has but the other doesn't...

R10:
Tivo Powered
Has Dual Live Buffers (30 minutes each)
Has Suggestion Recording
Single Click Search of all defined WISHLIST items
Hard Drive can be upgraded

R15:
DirecTV/NDS Powered
Has a Live buffer of 90 minutes (but just one live buffer, but does have two tuners)
Interactive Capabilities (DirecTV's new interactive items)
Internal SAT Signal DESTACKER
In Screen Window of programming, while in most menu items
On Screen Caller-ID

Other than that.... everything else is a difference in how and to what extent things can get done. Basically... after those features, everything you can do on an R10, can be done on an R15, and vice versa.

For more discussion on the R15, check out www.dbstalk.com
With regards to pro's/con's current issues, ect about the unit. (As R15 disucssion was requested to be removed from this particular forum)

Jim, you have almost 19,000 posts? Its just TV. :)
There are a lot of forums "sections" up here, not related to TV or TiVo or other things.

There are some people starting to close in on the 50,000 post mark....

(The forum has also been around for at least 6 years now)
20,000 posts in 5 years is a lot. That's 11 posts/day! every day.
We are bored... :) And there are a LOT of "layups" There are some days I do 11 in 30 minutes or less.
Well, it looks like I have a DSR6000R01 heading south. The fan is dead and one of the hard drives is loud, like loud can here it in the next room.

I contacted DTV for their "current customer" deals and they will send me a DirecTV DVR for $48 after the $100 mail in rebate.

I made mention any way of ENSURING it's a TIVO engine and NOT the new DirecTV engine unit. Nope, no guarantee. You get what you get and you can't throw a fit.

He "suggested" I hit a "big box" retailer (eg Circus City or Worse Buy) and get the "shelf" and see what's left. DirecTV will extend the $100 MIR for those units too or so I was told.

I asked what's been the feedback with the directv DVR. He stated, well, it's mixed, some really like it, some hate it. The TIVO hardcore crew hate it, miss the dual buffer and Tivo like engine.

I then asked him whether or not people were sending the newer DVRs back. He states, well he really couldn't comment, but basically stated, he has taken calls from "no so happy customers" when their new NON-Tivo powered DVR showed up and want to send it back.

One thing he also mentioned is DTV wanted to get away from paying Tivo per subscriber and the rising cost. Looks like above mentioned $1 per subscriber. Man, if it's $1, they are cheap or what?!

From my perspective, all TVs in my house have DVRs including the HR10-250 in the main room. Sure would make it easier having it all the same -- TIVO engine.

Then again, if I had a DSR6000 image, I'd be set and just replace the drive and power up my existing DSR6000R01 unit.

Food for thought.

Regards,
Jim

And, what prompted that response? I was just trying to point out the specific forum at DBSTalk where the R15 is talked about.

And, yes it is just TV. Also, it's 11.93 posts per day. :p

And thanks to IOTP for getting this thread back on track.
It's TV if it's powered by TIVO.

:)

BTW, Jim, post #141. Not 18, 892 like you... :)
IOTP: Your best bet at finding a Tivo powered box is on-line at either valueelectronics.com or weaknees.com - both have had many favorable comments in various forum threads.

As to the R15 - yeah, it pretty much is love or hate. I like mine, but I'm in the definate overwhelming minority in this forum.

What do you expect from a TiVo forum??? I'd be more surprised if the vote went the other way!

I haven't played with the R15 yet, but I have a friend who got one a week or so ago and he loves it. However, he's going from watching live TV to a DVR for the first time, so he has nothing to compare it to!
SeattleCarl:

I downloaded the ptvupgrade ICECAKE, now just need to locate a cheap HD.

Thanks for the tip! Robert at VE is a good guy!

Jim I didnt mean to offend, at work the link the the DBSTalk form is blocked, but thanks for the info and ill check it out this weekend.
That is the second person that has told me that dbstalk.com is blocked from work....

What did dbstalk have in the past that got them on a generic firewall block list?
(When I worked at Sears 4 years ago, TCF was blocked.. denoted as a CHAT room)

Its under the generic chat room category, but suprisingly this site isn't.
We are not supposed to visit forums of any kind at work. Even work related ones. The problem is that the IP address left on the forum records, could mean some sort of official "endorsement" of the forum or the content of the forum by the company, leading to a lawsuit. You cannot believe the paranoia of a large corporate IT departments.

I could pull a DSR6000 image in the next few weeks, if it is needed.

That is some serious paranoia.....

Hey I saw your IP address on a thread about XYZ... wow... that company supports XYZ... how would think it...

yesh... Like how many people on the internet would even know how to track an IP back to who owns it... (PUT YOUR HANDS DOWN... I know a lot of "here" can, but 99.5% of the general Internet crowd can't... Especialy not by just LOOKING at the IP address)
Update on the DSR6000R repair.

Had dead hard drive, and dead fan (fan died didn't know) I think that fried the drive.

CompUSA had a Maxtor 100GB for $39.99 after $50 mail in rebate. Note on the box, green sticker "free 20GB" inside.

Didn't notice till I got home.

Opened the box, 120GB maxtor drive ready to.

1. Paid $19.99 for the DSR6000 boot CD.
2. Created ISO from the ptvupgrade.com site for the
3. Changed CDRom to IDE secondary slave
4. Installed Maxtor 120GB as primary IDE master.
5. Boot from CD
6. Follow prompts 1 or 2 drive, 1 drive
7. Standby "baking cake" on drive
8. 15 minutes later installed 120GB into DSR6000.
9. Ran complete erase and restarted receiver
10. Contacted DTV for a bullet to the card & receiver

Wholla!

109 Hours. Single drive unit.

Couldn't ask for more.
