i do a lot of switching between tuners while watching live (or nearly live) TV, usually sports.

is the way the DTivo is programmed exclusive to tivo, or do other DVRs (dish/R15/comcast/cablevision, etc) allow you to toggle easily between the two w/o having to record anything?

There are cable dvrs and I believe even dish dvrs with dlb. Directv just abandoned it with their latest hardware.
I thought dual live buffers was a tivo patent. There are dish dvrs that have the ability to record one and watch a second but I dont think they give you the ability to rewind 2 different live channels like the dual tivo buffers

Dual live buffers is a tivo exclusive: Totally wrong here! Show me a Tivo with Dual Live Buffers. No Series 1 nor 2 unit had this feature.

Directv was in fact the first to come out with Dual Live Buffers. It was included on the Series 1 Directv/Tivo units and carried thru to the Series 2 units.

Directv has since dropped this feature.

One note: Do not get Dual Recording, Dual Tuners or Dual Live Buffers mixed up. Many people do :D

I assume the S2 DT units have this feature.
(Being the first standalone TiVo units which could have had this feature. Duel tuners are kind of a prerequisite for dual buffers)

The S2 DT does not have Dual Live Buffers. Yes Dual Tuners is a prerequisite for Dual Live Buffers.

Dual Tuners: 2 Feeds going into one unit. You can watch one while recording another. Or you can switch between Channels (Tuners).

But most Dual Tuners only have a single Buffer meaning you can rewind or fastforward whatever channel you are currently watching. Switch over to a different channel, and it starts all over again at that point.

Dual Buffers means you have Two Feeds, Two Channels and can switch between either of them. It also means you can rewind/fastforward each channel independantly.

After checking up, the only Tivo Units with Dual Live Buffers are the Series 3 and TivoHD.

All Series 1 and 2 Directv/Tivo units have this feature.

Sadly, Directv have dropped it from its current Model lineup.

A significant percentage of my viewing time is spent viewing via dual live buffers. Second most valuable feature. First is the ability to record to channels simultaneously.
