i have the series 2 tivo dvr (post 2004)
tv
cable box
dvd player

how many set of cables (red,white,yellow) do i need? so far i have 2, and have to to change them from tv-tivo to tv-dvd if i want to watch a dvd

does your TV have more than one set of inputs? The TiVo and a DVD player would connect independently to the TV. The cable box next to the TiVo. That makes three sets of cables.

the tv only has ONE input for a red/white/yellow cable

Did you check the front of your TV for inputs too?

If you need more inputs, you can buy a switchbox that lets you hook up several sets of cables into one input. (Like a USB hub.) The one I have requires you to switch manually between which sets of cables you want to use. That would be less of a pain than unhooking and re-hooking up the cables though.
