Question about Lifetime Service discount

2568 Views 12 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  lessd
I have an existing Series3 with Lifetime Service.

I'm thinking about upgrading to a Premiere. TiVo's website says I can get a MSD to reduce the Lifetime from $499 to $399.

But what would happen if I sold my Series3 and the new owner obtained the Lifetime on that unit?

My other Lifetime would already be paid for at $399.

Is this legit? Do I just have to have both units on the same account the moment I buy the new, discounted Lifetime?

If you do upgrade to a Premiere, call and tell TiVo you are going to deactivate your old S3. They may say to wait and see what they can do, then offer you the Lifetime for the S3 for $99. Many people have done this and taken the offer. That $99 Lifetime is the same as if you paid the $399 or $499. It can be transferred. Good luck.

I think you missed the part where the Original Poster said

"I have an existing Series3 with Lifetime Service."
It can be transferred.
Don't you mean that it can't be transferred.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure if you sell the S3, any future Tivo purchase will require you to pay the full price for the subscription since that is the qualifying unit on your account.
That is true. So you can only pull off this trick once. You have to have at least one full price unit, lifetime or monthly, on your account to qualify for MSD.

So pick up a lifetimed S1 cheap and let it phone home once a month.
Do you have to buy the new TiVo from TiVo in order to get the $399 lifetime price or can you call them to activate a new box that your purchased elsewhere and still get lifetime for $399?

If you are eligible for MSD, you're eligible for MSD, I would think.

If you have no other TiVos, they'll charge you $499 for lifetime no matter from who you buy it or for how much, so why would they be consistent on non-MSD and not consistent on MSD? That sounds like a prescription for confusing their own people and getting everybody mad at them.

I believe in the past Tivo would not allow MSD on refurbished units. Not sure what the current policy is.

If you get your hands on any new or used TiVo (any model) and are eligible for MSD you can get lifetime for $399.
