Just got a new 4k TV and neither of our TiVo Roamios work well with it (audio cuts out and is out of sync). Was hoping a Mini may solve our problem since it has newer HDMI 2.0 ports on it.

Question:

1. Do I have to "upgrade" my Roamio to the "New Experience" UI (TE4) to get the Mini to work or can I use it with TE3? Seems to be some conflicting info going around on this.

2. If I have to go to TE4 and decide to rollback to TE3 do I have to re-pair the cable card? I seem to be getting conflicting info on this as well.

Add'l info: Was just told that the Mini Lux will downgrade ITSELF to be compatible with my Roamio on TE3 without having to touch the software on my Roamio or upgrade it to TE4. Can anyone confirm this is true?

As soon as you try to select a TE3 host, you will get a choice. Upgrade the host or downgrade the Mini. You then get to run Guided Setup on the Mini again.

As you know, the Mini's remote will be IR only. That's the TiVo button with the "C" button.

I can't remember tho if other bedroom with Lux mini was able to pair or not in BT.
This cat could use some insight, if you’ve since remembered.

Well, this thread informs why @JoeKustra hadn't responded per his usual reliable self: RIP JoeKustra Rest, Joe, and thanks for the help over the years; you'll be sorely missed.

As for the LUX Remote on TE3 issue, I just stumbled across this disclaimer in TiVo's RF Pairing article...

The TiVo LUX Remote™ supports IR and RF mode on devices running TiVo Experience 4 but RF mode is not supported on devices running TiVo Experience 3 user interface. You can still use the TiVo LUX remote on devices with TiVo Experience 3 in IR mode.

I've just replaced a dead Mini with a new MIni LUX to my Roamio Pro and the set-up is asking me if I want to downgrade the new Mini to match the host. I am running TE3 and wish to remain. This is the onscreen message:

Your host DVR is not yet using the new Tivo user experience. This Tivo Mini must downgrade to the same user experience. Yada, yada, yada

When I choose to downgrade the Mini I get this message:

WARNING: All settings will be cleared, including Parental Controls and accessibility preferences. Yada, yada, yada.

My question is all settings of what? The host DVR or the Mini? I don't want to lose My Shows, OnePass, etc.

you are correct that the message is unclear, but it is referring to the settings of the Mini, not the host DVR, so feel free to proceed without worry.

@PSU_Sudzi

Any feedback you can share about that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Josh

I wish I could help you out more but I don’t have that Mini lux anymore, I never packed it up when I moved to my new house. So no way to check it’s status. All I know is that I spent more than an hour trying all kinds of pairing and repairing and think I got it to work. Sorry I can’t help any more but if you search through threads here I know Joe Kustra and I posted about it.

Much appreciated! Thank you. :)

My issue is that I selected to downgrade the mini vox because my series 5 is running TE3. But after going back thru setup, I no longer had the Wi-Fi option on the mini (only moca or Ethernet). I am not set up for either one, which is the reason I went for the vox + usb Wi-Fi adapter bundle in the first place. I’d happily go back and try TE4 on my series 5, but now I’ve got a downgraded TiVo lux with no Wi-Fi option. Any idea how to get it to reset and upgrade it back to TE4?

the mini software will/must match the host dvr software. so, on the mini, you will need to select a dvr running TE4 as its host, and then the mini will require you to upgrade its own software to TE4.

Thanks. My problem is I can’t get that far on the mini setup (to select the host dvr). The connection selection comes first before the host dvr selection, and Wi-Fi is no longer in the list since I downgraded the mini. Seems I need to somehow reset my mini LUX back to TE4 first (factory reset sequence?). Then it should give me the Wi-Fi option which I can use to select the host dvr running TE4.

@Jimi Millet ,

Here's a recent post of mine to another TCF User on this topic - maybe it will help you out a bit:
It's VERY DANGEROUS getting all of your information from TiVo Customer Service - the quality varies greatly! :(
  • Let's begin with the fact that a TiVo Premiere is limited to running T)iVo E)xperience 3 and to benefit from MANY of the features on a Mini Lux, you need the 'Target' TiVo Unit running T)iVo E)xperience 4.
    .
  • The WiFi 5.0 Adapter that the TiVo CSR told you about requires TE4; you can't run TE4 on your Premiere, so that's out.
    .
  • The Voice Feature on the Mini Lux Remote requires TE4; see above.
    .
  • Each time you 'accidentally' press the Voice Button on the Mini Lux Remote, it's going to try to switch to TE4.
    .
  • The Mini Lux Remote uses either IR or Bluetooth (no RF, AFAICT, based on problems people have reported trying to get it to work on varies TiVo Units; you'll have to SEARCH the TCF Archive for more details...)
    .
  • That's a starter, off the top of my head...
IMHO, the * BEST * TiVo Unit was the Series 5 Roamio Basic with 4 tuners, capable of either Cable or OTA. If you SEARCH eBay for a few weeks or so, you should be able to find one, WITH LIFETIME, for ~$150 - $250. You could connect it via WiFi, but it probably will be intermittent unless you're a Techie and your WiFi set up is top-notch. You could also add a MoCA adapter to your purchase; a discontinued MoCA 1.0 adapter will do the job just fine.

If you want to (maybe) spend a little more, and limit yourself to Cable Only, a Roamio Plus or Roamio Pro will have 6 tuners and a built-in MoCA adapter. I've never been interested in limiting myself to Cable Only, so you'll have to research the prices yourself.

Do some homework / research of your own and see what you think of my suggestions. ;)

EDIT: Correct QUOTE
...Any idea how to get it to reset and upgrade it back to TE4?
  1. Temporarily set up the Mini Lux in a location with wired eithernet
  2. "Downgrade" back to TE4 ;)
  3. Confirm that WiFi works again
  4. Move the Mini Lux back to its desired location

Thanks a bunch. I’m at the point where I may give TE4 a try, but suspect I will want to downgrade back to TE3. And to do so, I believe I will lose whatever content I have. So now also thinking about building out MOCA on my system. Decisions to make, but I believe what you listed is the best answer to put the mini back to TE4.
