Question about 1 TB and INSTANT CAKE

I don't even know what Instant Cake is... but it sounds like a question I'd like to see an answer to =) as well as an explanation of Instant cake?

Instant Cake is sold by one of the forums sponsors (dvrupgrade).

It allows you to take a new hard drive, mount it in your PC and Instant Cake formats the drive correctly for Tivo and installs the Tivo operating system on the drive. You can use a larger hard drive than the one that originally came with your Tivo.

You will need the specific version of Instant Cake for your exact model of Tivo.

As for whether you can install a 1TB internal drive along with a 1TB external, I have not tried it myself, but I do have a 1TB external running on my S3 which is still using the original internal drive.

I cannot guarantee it, but it should work, unless the Instant Cake upgrade writes partitions which are incompatible with an external upgrade. There is a limit to the number of partitions which can be accesses by the TiVo, and if the partitions written by Instant Cake are too small and numerous, you may have problems upgrading. Cerainly it's possible to have a 1TB internal drive and a 1TB external drive. One of my S3 Tivos was purchased form Weaknees with a 1TB internal drive and upgraded by me using the mfstools live Linux distro CD. It took far more time to open the TiVo, unbolt and remove the drive, plug the drives into a desktop PC, and then put everything back together afterwards than it did to boot to Linux, perform the marriage and shut down the PC.
