Prepping for D* to S3 jump: Questions

Have been a heavy duty D*TiVo user for over six years, currently operating three SD units (1 S1, 2 S2) and one HD unit (HR10-250). Need more HD recording capability to capture new season shows airing simultaneously. One dual tuner HR10 will no longer cut it. Since it’s very likely that I will be going to VZ FIOS over the next year or so, I am strongly considering a S3 or TiVoHD, but have a couple of questions. Until I get the FIOS service, I will use the S3 exclusively to record OTA network shows and the HR10 to get OTA plus HBO, SHO etc.

I also have a homemade multi-room setup with the HR10 HDMI going to my main TV in a basement family room, and the HR10 component output going to a distribution amp to a bedroom TV (with future growth for other future upstairs HDTVs). Works like a charm, except I can’t watch both TVs simultaneously since HR10 doesn’t output HDMI and component at the same time. As long as the downstairs TV is off or watching one of the SD’s I’m OK upstairs.

Now for my questions:

1) How do the S3/HD units deal with HDMI vs component outputs? Same as HR10? Do they possibly output simultaneously? If an HDMI cable is attached, but not actively transmitting, will the component out work?

2) A more generic HD question: Can a downlink from an OTA antenna be split with a simple high quality RF splitter as with analog cable? I would presume that since OTA is on the UHF band, this would work, but I’m trying to avoid surprises.

3) I believe it’s been established that the S3 works with FIOS, and operability will likely improve by the time I transition, but if anyone has any pearls of wisdom, I’m listening.

Appreciate your inputs. I’m anxious to get away from D* and back with TiVo. Before my D* days, I had an original 14-hour SA unit and loved it (except for the low capacity).

Just a forum newbie question. What does the envelope symbol in the leftmost column signify? Some are red, some blue. And why is mine the only one I see that appears to have a seal over the envelope flap? Does that signify no responses?
Nevermind the newbie forum question. Just spotted the symbol legend at the bottom of the page that explains the envelope symbols. Duh!
You're way way ahead of me with system expertise and setup.

I will offer, the OTA signal is a huge jump in quality over D*TV. Just getting my system setup, plan is for 1 wk overlap before i cancel Direct. Bought a Large Channel Master Antenna that was on sale and aimed it in the general direction of the stations, and got a great signal on all stations.
Anybody have an answer to the HDMI/component question?
I am also probably going to switch from D* to something else (probably comcast unfortunately) when I decide to transition from standard to HD definition. I think I will start as you have HD TV, with either an S3 or TivoHD for OTA coupled with standard D*.
I will be interested in hearing you progress and thoughts on your transition. Also, I have heard that OTA must be line - of - sight to the broadcast station. I live on the Northwest side of Chicago. (Cicero Ave. and Irving Park Road) Any problems reported receiving OTA HD in Chicago? I did a search but didn't find any reports on this.
You might want to jump on the Bestbuy deal for a 1TB Western Digital drive for $259. Then you can use a 10 or 12% off coupon for the TiVo HD which retails for $300. Use the 1TB drive to get 131 HD hours of recording capacity.
I did the same thing and left DirecTV in May. I got Comcast in December but didn't completely leave Direct until May. Now I got Fios 2 weeks ago and will keep Comcast until December.
I used the Hitachi Acoustic management tool to set the WD drive to 128. it works with the WD and Hitachi drives. My Hitachi drives are set to 192.

1) HDMI and component are output simultaneously (along w/S-video and composite) on S3s (I don't know about HDs). Some posters say they don't get component if the HDMI connected set is not on. FWIW, I have component going to an older Mitsubishi RPTV and HDMI to a Westinghouse LCD w/o any HDMI handshake problems.

2) Yes, OTA can be split using a RF splitter. Be advised that that a 2 port splitter will reduce the output on each leg by half or more.

3) Unfortunately, I don't have Fios; hopefully next yr.

Thanks A J

Your answer to 1) indicates that there are other posts relating to HDMI/component simultaneous use. Do you have any thread links? I haven't located any relevant posts.

Thanx

Do a search for "HDMI and component" (w/o the quotes) in the "search" link at the top of the page, to the right. There are a lot of posts but I don't know what applies to you. Good hunting.
