Every time TiVo sends a software update our Premiere hangs during the installation on the "External storage missing" screen. I wind up having to power cycle both the drive and the TiVo. And then it installs the update and then when rebooting from that does it AGAIN. After power cycling everything again, it boots up normally.

My external drive is a supported one. In fact, I bought it *from* TiVo.

Surely I can't be the only one.

What's the deal?

I'm guessing that no one cares.
Not likely that TiVo will give you any love...

Both of my Premieres have the WD-AV 1TB external sata drive attacked. I've never experienced what your describing. You may need to run kickstart drive check.

If all else fails shutdown the TiVo, remove external drive, reboot, reconnect, reboot. This will cause loss of some if not all recordings.

What's the deal?

It could be a sign that one of your drives is failing. You could hook the drives up to your computer and run the manufacturers diagnostic utility.

There is a JMFS utility that I used to copy the contents of my original premiere 320G drive to a 3T drive using a computer.

If your drives are old, you might wan't to move to a new larger internal drive and abandon the external drive, before they fail completely.

I posted this same basic question in the "HELP Forum" section..

I have used "kickstart" in the past but since the update that removed the "History Walking Tivo Man" at system restart, I am unable to get it to the hard drive test display screen, in part due to now all three TIVO display lights do not display on the screen... Also must the unit be set to "ZERO" from its current setting of "SEVEN"? (in the past it did not mater what device number the system / remote had been assigned.)

i had the same problem with mine. I just reboot and continue. My drive is brand new. I just think tivo, dont stop the drives, before applying the update, so the drive goes zombie.
