Premiere Elite has no (clothes) OTA!

I’m sure all know this by now but is everyone okay with this. I thought there was requirement that all TVs and set top box have OTA? I guess what’s good for TiVo and the cable companies is bad for the folks that foot the bill.
I’m really disappointed to see this as I was hoping to upgrade my two TiVo HDs when they got the HD interface working and as fast as it should be.
Will the Premiere Elite work with DIRECTV? Off-air antenna? Analog cable?
No. No. No. The Elite is only for digital cable and Verizon FiOS, which essentially means you'll need a CableCARD from your cable company for this box to function.

The FCC granted Tivo an exemption for this box.
Doesn't bother me even a little. I wish there was some option for consumers willing to pay extra for that feature but I'm glad Tivo saved a few bucks by not including it. If they would shave another $5 off the sale price they can keep their remote, misc A/V cables, owners manual, window cling and anything else in the box that isn't the Elite itself.

As long as the public is made aware of the features and limitations I don't see how anyone can have a problem with OTA not being included. Real world - Best Buy needs to be darn sure that my elderly neighbor knows what digital cable is before they start pushing her to buy this box.
so why is this 10000 bucks at best buy , does it come with a 'titanium package?"

This is how Best Buy lists coming soon items. Rumor is Best Buy will have it on sale starting Sunday. Since you can't preorder it, it probably won't update till after midnight Saturday.

The same thing happened with the Premiere around 3/17/10 which was 11 days prior to the launch.
I thought that the exemption was for no ANALOG tuners. A DirecTV box doesn't have OTA tuners either.
Unfortunately, Premiere Elite is only designed for digital cable, no OTA or analog cable.

$500 a copy I don't think they saved anything. But everyone business is in it to make money...

And? The Premiere Elite is for cable only and the Premiere is for cable+ota. TiVo will now how 2 choices for customers. I don't see having choices is such a problem. In fact, I'm glad they finally did this. It gives TiVo a box they can market to cable companies that is still on the same platform as the original Premiere. This means you can expect continued development of the Premiere platform for quite some time.

No, there is no such rule.

The waiver others refer to allowed TiVo to also drop the analog cable tuning capability.
I've been living happily with multiple Series 3 units for years now and didn't want to spring for the Premiere, but the announcement of the Premiere Elite (2TB in one box, 4 tuners, one-and-only-one CableCARD rental instead of two per Series 3) has gotten me interested again.

The thing is: I can't tell whether the reported UI sluggishness that afflicted the Premiere at its launch is still an issue or not. This seems as good a place as any to ask that question.

bkdtv's Premiere FAQ hasn't been updated since May 2010 (and I gather he hasn't been around here for a while), so I can't easily see if this is still an issue with the latest software.

If the second core is still disabled and the UI is still sluggish this long after the Premiere's release, I'm going to be far less interested in spending the $1000 (for hardware plus service) that purchasing the Elite will require.

Can someone please bring me up to date?

The Elite is the same hardware as the normal Premiere so the performance should be the same. I don't know if the initial software on the Elite will be the same as the normal Premiere but you can expect them to be sync'd at some point so they are running the same software. The sluggishness of the HDUI has mostly been fixed for a while now. The main issue is missing HD screens that drop you out of the HDUI which makes it "slow".
We don't know that they are exactly the same since it may have a newer Broadcom chip in it just to give it a little more room since it will need to handle more functions at the same time.
Thanks. I'm not trying to predict the performance of the Elite but rather trying to get a sense of how the original Premiere is now behaving a year and a half after its launch.

It sounds like there are still issues with performance even after all this time. And that's disturbing.

Performance is in the eyes of the beholder and to some degree has to do with what you are comparing it too and your personal expectations.

If you set the Premiere to the SDUI (basically the same UI as the Series 3 HD or TiVo HD) it is clearly superior to both the Series 3 HD and the TiVo HD (Note I have one of each attached to the same TV and can easily compare them to each other).

The HDUI is slower than the SDUI, however at this point I would not say the HDUI is slow, but I would also say it is not fast like the SDUI.

Regarding if the HDUI is "better" than the SDUI that depends on what you consider makes a UI "better". The SDUI get the job done fast and efficiently. The HDUI is flashy and provides much more visual information but as far as I can tell doesn't really get the job done any better and isn't as fast as the SDUI.

Thanks,

Amusing post. What's your point?

With the Elite TiVo is selling a premium digital cable DVR. They are very clear in saying that is what it is.

If that isn't what you want don't buy it.

Given that the Elite is a Premium product, is a new release and is at the top of TiVo's product line I don't see the $500 + service price as out of line. Companies don't build premium products to sell them at low margins or a loss.

Honestly price wise it compares really well to getting 4 tuners from either a Premiere or Premiere XL.

  1. 1 Elite with lifetime service = $1000 provides 300 hrs HD
  2. 2 Premiere XLs with lifetime service 1 with MSD = $1500 provides 300 hrs HD
  3. 2 Premieres with lifetime service 1 with MSD = $1100 provides 90 hrs HD
Plus you only need one cable card instead of 2. So is the Elite really expensive for someone who is looking for a digital cable DVR with 4 tuners and lots of storage?

Thanks,

No problem for me either.... if they implement multi-room scheduling and one NPL for your networked Tivos. Otherwise, they should add OTA tuners.
