Hello everyone. Which 2tb external drives are compatible with the Elite?

Officially, none.

The largest one supported by TiVo is the Western Digital My Book 1TB A/V DVR extender.

Looks like Weaknees has found a compatible drive:
That is also sold in conjunction with the Elite. It isn't sold separately.
Is it likely to be an off the shelf drive or something specifically for the Elite?
I have a Western Digital My Book 1TB A/V DVR extender that was on my premiere that i moved over the the elite and it seems to be working fine

I am sure it is an off the shelf drive but I am also sure they manually married it to the Elite (not plug and play).
Where are the instructions for marrying an external drive to the Elite? I have a 2TB drive that I could use for such a purpose!
i'd even put up with only 1TB to be official but the sanctioned drive is completely out of stock at pretty much every internet retailer. Tivo doesnt even have it availible on their website.

i get they must have some deal with WD but add more WD esata drives to the approved list for crying out loud.

has anyone ever found a drive that didn't work with an S3 (which was wide open)? i used 3 different ones on S3's and never had a problem. I cant imagine WD doesn't make at least a few more options that would work. they could add those to the list and give us some options.

They all worked unless they had some wonky built in sata controller instead of just powering the disk and a normal sata port.
Prices for drives were driven up by the recent flood in Thailand...

Last yr I snatched up a WD My Book for under $100... now same drves approaching the $160 mark...

Guess "supple an demand" does come to play

Anyone???
There are none. You need to purchase the Elite and 2TB external drive together from Weaknees.

Actually there were some Seagate FreeAgent Pro drives that were deemed "not compatible" and they will not PnP with an S3.

I actually had 2 free agent pro's on my 2 s3's. The logs did show weird stuff but playback was a never a problem. They DID die prematurely but they basically worked - so maybe some controller oddities but they didn't brick themselves or the TiVo. I think there were many of us with those drives when they first came out.
i picked up one of the official sanctioned drives the other day when they came back in stock on amazon.

WARNING- the stupid esata cable that WD packs with the drive is not compatible with the tivo. I remember years back when they turned on the external storage for the S3's that there were some cables that the actual connector protruded too little to make proper contact with the tivo. You had to but the right kind of cable.

I used the one that came with the drive and the Tivo just ignored the drive. Luckily i had one of the good spare cables floating around and wouldn't you know it when i compared the two the one that came with the drive is the shorter type. I used the other cable i had and all was well.

Would have thought that they would have squared away this issue after years of esata drives but i guess not....

You can actually send your Elite to Weaknees now and for a small price of $449 they can add an external 2TB drive to your Elite :D

Is the drive that comes in the Tivo Premiere Elite 2TB?

Yes.
Wish there was an easier way to create a backup drive. Sounds so complicated and to buy one online is very expensive.
