I though Pip Torrens was amazing as Herr Starr, till the end. I was looking forward to his scenes more than anyone else's.
To me, he and his character really ended up carrying the show. It was a truly reprehensible and narcissistic character to the extreme, but the performance and scripting around him was executed so well.
I felt the actor playing Frankie Toscani also pulled off his role well. This show liked to be over-the-top.
How can a show with so many interesting and conflicted characters end up so uninteresting?
I think it painted itself into a corner trying to wrap up the series. Once you start a conflict with an all-knowing all-powerful superbeing who could end the universe instantly with a single thought, there's really no way to legitimately resolve that. Seemed like they really didn't know what to do with Jesse Custer, and if you don't know what to do with the central protagonist, you're in trouble. IMO if it had been suddenly and unexpectedly canceled without trying to resolve the story, might have almost been a kindness.
This was a series where the subplots outshined the primary story.
I am curious if anyone is familiar with the source material (it's a comic book thing, right) and how the resolution was handled there.
