Pre-Roll Ads Redux?

3130 Views 10 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  chiguy50
For some reason, the dreaded pre-roll ads have reappeared on our TiVos & absolute chaos & instability have ensued - could be as a result of me stupidly adjusting my privacy settings on my TiVo account.

Can someone please remind me of the easiest way to get them removed again? I tried calling a couple of times last week but bailed after far too long on hold - grrr!

TIA!

They've reappeared on my Roamio as well. I'd been successfully blocking them at the router, but guessing they've changed the address. It was prod.adgwy.tivo.com. No idea what it is now.

Same thing happened to me the other week, after I called into support for some troubleshooting and then to buy new Mini Luxes. As soon as I saw the ads, I got on chat, stated that I had the ads removed before and they came back. Chat said they would remove them and they were gone in less than a day.
My pre-roll ads returned to the Roamio after a one year hiatus, so I emailed TiVo but never got a response. Used chat earlier today and after a few minutes of corporate mandated pushback got a commitment to disable pre-roll again. Agent said it would take up to 72 hours, it took more like 72 minutes!

Disappeared again, with no intervention on my part, a couple of days after posting this. Weird, but I'll take it.
I’ve never seen these but in case I do, what will I have to do to remove them?
Same thing happened to me. Took me a while to realize it was pre-roll ads. I had called last year and got them removed. I did a live chat with support on the Tivo website and told the agent the ads were back and to remove them again. He id and within 48 hours, I have no more pre-roll ads.

I have a Bolt Vox and Comcast cable. Primarily because of the pre-roll ads (a harbinger of future additional problems, I'm sure), I have seriously considered leaving Tivo after more than 10 years. In the past, I looked into antenna, but the reception just wasn't good enough. In addition, broadcast TV just doesn't give me the complete sports packages I want.

This year I seriously evaluated YouTube TV. Although the offering is quite complete in channel availability, and the cost is comparable to what I pay Tivo and Comcast together, the interface and the performance suck. Particularly, the organization of recordings makes it difficult to find what I want. However, the worst is the fast forwarding. Although fairly responsive, in terms of how fast you can go, it is difficult to use to skip commercials. You don't see enough frames and so it is difficult to know when to stop. In addition, it doesn't seem to skip back from when you push the play button again the way Tivo does, so finding the end of the commercials is fraught with error and difficult.

I also tried to check out Comcast's X1 DVR. Comcast is terrible in how they sell their product. All they care about is locking you into a full-featured system with lost of channels at a low price, then hoping you will re-up after the trial period so they can overcharge you.

After a lot of back and forth with a Comcast rep on the phone, I was told that Comcast no longer sells DVR's that record to local hard drives. Their vaunted X1 box is only a streamer that connects to their online DVR, making the service quite simiilar to YouTube TV. But it's worse that YouTube TV because neither the Tivo, nor my Apple TV have apps for Xfinity, so I would have to use the X1 or purchase an Roku or other device that supports streaming via the Xfinity app. I tried the Xfinity app on my iPad and found it not particularly good.

I'll stick with Tivo for now.

NOT true at all; that's simply what the phone drones are trained to say. Go to your local office & they WILL have them there.
BUT for full disclosure...as you may have read here & other places, Comcast is pretty much adding any new (HD) channels in IP-only, which do NOT work on Tivo's. (in pretty much all of these cases, the SD version IS still available in QAM...so if you can live with SD quality, you can still watch on Tivo)
Also, any IP-only channels you record on X1, ALWAYS record "in the cloud" - even if you DO have an X1 box with an HDD. So in that case, it's actually a moot point.
FWIW, I added an XG1 DVR box last year, to supplement my Tivo's, for the (very) rare instance I would need to record an IP-only channel.
I'll just add a couple of points:

1) Comcast does not sell DVRs or STBs of any kind; they only rent their own gear.

2) It's been reported that some Xfinity stores have run out of the XG1v4 (4K/HDR-capable) DVRs and are instead issuing either an older DVR version (e.g., the non-4K XG1v1) or one of the headless X1 STBs (e.g., Xi5/6).
