Is that possible?

I want to get rid of the older, less reliable 40gb...
I do not believe I am using anywhere near max capasity of the drives...

Are there anyway to merge the two drives into the bigger one (of the two)??


Any input much appreciated.

You can't merge them, but you could image the 300 GB drive as the only drive in the unit.
You will lose all recordings and settings if you do that. See the upgrade forum for more info.

Reason I'm asking is because my Tivo now hangs... trying to figure what the
problem is... I wonder if the aux fan I added failed?


Any disk utility built into Tivo? such as scandisk? fsck?

I got the tivoupgrade CD... I didnt find fsck on it... which command should
I be using?

You can copy your old drive or backup and restore the HD image with MFSTools. Windows apps. are not used. There are very detailed upgrade guides out there.

ya.. but i have to replace the bad drive with a larger one.
I can't exactly merge the two drives together...

So I was hoping... if I can run some kinda of disk repair utility on them.

Looks like even using dd_rescue I would still have to backup to a larger
drive... but I am not 100% certain that it's the older 40G.... maybe I should
just try it...

Same model is not a requirement, larger would be better.

I thought there was a way to unmarry the two drives. However, I am no expert on units with two drives. If you are not concerned about keeping all of your recordings, personally I would re-image the 300GB drive with an Instant Cake CD from PTVUpgrades. Any time you have two drives, especially of different ages, you are asking for more future problems.

Not willing to redo all the HD and losing all my recordings...
I test if maybe my Tivo hangs due to overheating (I do have 2 HDs running
producing lots of heat).

First I let the Tivo run as usual... but have the top cover removed.. it ran two
days w/o hanging. Then I went to frys..bought some universal heat sinks...
installed them on all the larger chips... problem free since.
