I'm just curious if anyone has photographed this phenomenon.

I don't have it, but maybe I just haven't seen it because I don't know what I am looking for?

I mean, all mpeg-compressed content shows a -little- blocking at times of high contrast.

Thanks for the pics!

Ok - wow, that's bad. I am definitely not seeing that (M Cards on 2 units.) But it is definitely an obvious fault and not people being over-sensitive to mpeg compression.

For the record, I installed a new TiVo HD down in the theater Friday and never saw any of this before or after the update. However, this is TiVo #3 in that room and there are no cable cards, just OTA. I record most stuff on TiVos 1 & 2 (a pair of HR10-250s).

I think the only people with these issues are now mainly us unfortunate souls who have to use 2 single stream Scientific Atlanta CableCards! Those using OTA or Moto Cards seem to be doing quite well.

Yep. I've got two SA single stream cable cards with loads of macroblocking/pixelization.

Are we really sure that its the Tivo HD thats the problem? As I looked at those pictures that MOYEKJ provided. I became more curious. I have TWC and I have both an S3, a Tivo HD, and 2 Motorolla boxes from TWC.

For the most part I have never had any issues with "Pixelization" on any box. EXCEPT when it has rained really bad.

THEN I have that issue on EVERY box... Including TWC's DCT6412 boxes as well.

One night during a bad rain storm (From the huricane that was coming to hit Houston) I was getting "issues" but then when I looked at the picture on all my DVR's it was doing that not just on the TIVO box's but on the TWC's Moto 6412 boxes as well.

So it seems to me that it is a CABLE issue (That won't ever be resolved). You will always get some "Data" loss on occasion no matter what "Carrier" you use. (Cable, Copper, Fiber, Wireless).

So I am honestly wondering, all these complaints that I see about the S3 and TIVO HD if it isn't really just a Signal issue and not with the hardware or software.

TexasGrillChef.

Like I said, the only time I have seen this issue on my DVR's is during bad weather, & then I see it on ALL DVR's Tivo & the TWC Moto's

Yeah...we're pretty sure. You probably haven't read through all of the THD threads, but Tivo has admitted to the problem, and already posted some partial fixes that helped people with Motorola cablecards. The macro blocking is still a problem for many with SA cablecards.

I've done quite a bit of testing to verify that it is indeed the Tivo HD. Long story short...my cablecards work fine when installed directly in my TV, or in the Tivo S3 that I purchased yesterday. In either of the two Tivo HDs I've tried (returned the first one), I get macro blocking like the pictures provided by megazone. These "events" typically occur on average around 8 times per minute. Probably half of those are worse than any of the pictures shown in that link. This is with the same wiring and cablecards as the S3 that works fine.
