I am curious if a show (for ex: CSI) starts 10 minutes late because of a football game or some presidential speech. Will the TIVO box realize this and start recording (and subsequently stop) at the correct times? This question applies to both if the TIVO box is connected via a phone line or a wired lan connection.

Sorry if this is a basic question, but a friend of mine has just gotten a Toshiba TIVO box and was asking me some questions which I couldn't answer to satisify him.

Sunday nights suck for accurate recordings. Even with a LAN.

It doesn't matter if we are talking about Sunday night or .. umm .. Thursday noon.. or Wed. at 4 am.. .. if anything delays a shows start time.. I am pretty much out of luck .. I will most likely miss part of my show... correct?

Guide data is only updated about once a day regardless of connection type.

Why not just go with the tivo basic package and basically use the tivo as a vcr. in other words .. manually set the start and stop time of a show? I mean what is the benefit of season pass then? sorry if that sounds like a dumb question, but i was under the impression that the season pass solved the problem of trying to catch the entire season of 24 or what ever show you wanted to watch. (solved the problem, having the definition of, if a show changes time slots or gets delayed you will still see the show.)

Because you'd have to be home to edit the manual start and stop time on the recording anyway. The whole point of TiVo is to set it up, and you don't have to be home.

There's no way to predict whether a game is going to go into overtime, so there's no way for the TiVo to know it.

A couple of advantages that Season Passes have over manual recordings...

- If a show gets moved to another day or time (in advance, not because of an unexpected event), the SP will follow it. Manual recordings will not.
- If a show is not on one week, or is a repeat, the SP will know that, and won't record the show. Manual recordings will just record the time block without knowing what it's recording.

If TiVo gets altered guide data in time, it can change the recording time for a season pass recording. That's an iffy if at times, though.

You don't need Basic to record by time/channel, you can use that function with a subbed or Pus TiVo service.

Most TiVos either sub or not. In unsubbed mode they cannot even record at all, even by time/channel.

Basic/Plus are terms that apply only to Toshiba and Pioneer units.
