I'd do it every week because if it messes up for some reason and you can't get to a working phone line real soon, you don't have a program guide.

At least once a week. The accuracy and richness of the guide data tapers off after a week.

If you do it every two weeks, you'll be out of guide data for 2 days before you connect and download more. Tivo keeps 14 days of guide data, but 2 of those days are yesterday and the day before that.
