I just called Cablevision to ask them a question about ordering PPVs and they mentioned that two-way cable cards should be available by the end of the year that will allow us to utilize On Demand services in addition to the PPV ordering capabilities that we currently have. Has anyone else heard this from a Cablevision rep?
Optimum says two-way cable cards are coming...

I may be wrong but even though the cards are two-way the S3 and the TivoHD are not. So you won't notice any difference. If you had the cables companies DVR then you might notice a difference.

The rep is likely confusing single stream and multi-stream cards for 2-way communication. All cable-cards are capable of 2-way communication, not all host devices are capable as the isn't/wasn't a standard for 2-way communication. The TiVo HD and S3 do not have the hardware required for 2-way communication and thus do not, currently, support features which would require 2-way communication to function.
How would it be different with the cable company's DVR? My understanding is that you can already do On Demand with their DVR so what additional functionality would the two-way cards provide to a cable-company DVR user? I got the impression that the two-way card would be a nice upgrade for S3 and TivoHD users since it would allow us to use On Demand (not to mention it provides the cable company with the opportunity for additional revenue).HiDefGator said:

I have a somewhat related question. I ordered a UFC event several weekends ago on my TW box. I thought I could then record/view it on my S3 - but couldn't. Any ideas why not?

There aren't 2-way cards. The rep was confused. S/he was likely confused by multistream cards. Cable cos are required to provide new stbs with cablecards, and as such have finally started to roll out multistream cards (They also really only began manufacture recently). The TiVo HD is M-card capable, the S3 likely will be at some point (The hardware is there but it is not in the software). Multistream cards mean you need one card for two tuners (it supports more, but TiVo does not) it does NOT mean two way communication.psywzrd said:

The CableCARD doesn't support the communication standard. The host for the cablecard supports the communication. The initial host for CableCARD did not support a two-way communication standard that was compatible with the current STB's (strange since both use CableLabs based standards, but true) The FCC is moving them down this path w/ OCAP. But don't count on the cableco's to support the two-way on cablecard based STB's via the cablecard host communications until 2009.

That's not true. I have DirecTV and I've ordered and recorded every UFC event for the last few years and I've never had any problem watching them more than 24 hours after the show aired. In fact, I've saved some of them on my Tivos for months, dumped them to DVD, etc.Dr_Diablo said:

Did you order it by calling TW, or did you order it through the TW STB?
If you ordered through the STB, only the STB would get it. If you wanted it on the S3, you would have needed to call TW to have them enable ALL of your outlets. I did this for a WWE event (I have Cablevision) and I was able to record it on my S3.

Could the Cablevision rep be reffering to the new STB's like the SA 8300HDC that as per FCC needs to have a cablecard in it instead of the SA8300HD's that had smart cards?

so we are clear, all cable cards support 2 way coms. Its the devices the cable cards are plugged into that dont support it.

Their boxes have the two way hardware. Cablecards of any sort add no functionality that the old integrated security boxes had, they just have to use cablecards in their own boxes now (if they weren't granted a waiver, or their waiver has expired).psywzrd said:
