On full drive, which shows your recorded get deleted first?

I see that the shows you record have a default "keep until tommorowish" random time. I understand that this is pretty much an indicator that says it's eligible for deletion in the event of a future recording not having enough HD space.

Which shows will actually be automatically deleted when this happens? Now to me, "logic" would suggest that the oldest recorded shows SHOULD be deleted first. But this "keep until random time tommorrow" field makes me wonder.

1. Items in the Deleted Items Folder
2. Items in the Suggestions Folder (oldest record date first)
3. Regular items (oldest record date first)

Items that have not gotten to their keep until date will not be deleted. It would decide not to record new shows if all your items were that way and it was out of space (generally only happens when people use the keep until I delete (KUID) option regularly). You can update keep until dates to make sure something gets kept for a little while longer.

Instead of oldest record date it should be oldest keep until date. Since once you change the keep until date, it gets moved to the bottom of the list for deletion.

I cannot tell by record date when something is more or less likely to get deleted. I have some content over a year old that will be deleted after content i recorded 2 months ago gets deleted.

Is there a way to set it to delete priority = oldest recorded as socrplyr's #3 indicates? Because it looks like it does store the recorded date (if not the time...unless you count the time in the "keep until" field, which looks like it defaults to +24 hours).

Or is socrplyr just imagining things? ;)

I mean, judging by the TiVo's crude software design so far, I wouldn't be surprised if it is a "random delete priority" that can't be changed. But that still is pretty lame and lazy programming....especially for the DVR brand that "started it all".

it's not random. if you never mess with the delete date, then yes it would be by the oldest recorded. But many times I will see an item might be deleted. So I change the date until it's eligible to be deleted, but once I do that, it could be my oldest recorded show and it is not going to get deleted until the other content that had an earlier "save until" date gets deleted.

ABSOLUTELY NOT.
Items that have not gotten to their keep until date will be deleted early to record scheduled programs.

(generally only happens when people use the keep until I delete (KUID) option regularly). You can update keep until dates to make sure something gets kept for a little while longer.

There is no "generally about it. This happens when you have everything set to KUID and only when everything is set to KUID. It NEVER happens when there are items that have not gotten to their keep until date.

True. And if you push the TiVo it'll even tell you that. Just try to record more in 24 hours than the TiVo can hold. (Admittedly its hard to do these days with the Bigger TiVo drives)

I did it a few years back during the olymipics. Record 40 hours a day for a couple days in a row and every time you schedule a new recording or adjust a keep until date you get a warning that one or more shows will be deleted early and the default keep until time will fall to less than 24 hours.

If the TiVo begins running out of space the first to go is:
1) Deleted Items
2) Suggestions
3) once both of those are gone the TiVo will start working through expired program; that is programs beyond their keep until date *
4) if the TiVo runs out of expired programs to delete it'll start expiring programs early and deleting those. (Again oldest first if you haven't messed with anything)

*If you have ever adjusted a keep until date it will delete the oldest recording first.
If you adjust that recording's keep until date so it isn't expired (or change it to keep until I delete) it'll skip past it and go to the next oldest.
(I'm not sure what happens if you'd adjusted the keep until date on the oldest recording but then let it expire again. I think the TiVo deleted by "expired longest" rather than "oldest expired" but I haven't carefully tested that)

What is an "expired" program? Are you referring to a program that has a "Keep until" date in the past? On my TiVo, it doesn't seem like there are any "Keep until" dates in the past. It seems to add 24 hours to it as it is about to "expire".

An expired program is one with a yellow dot with an exclamation point inside it (at least on the standard def user interface).

The program has been kept longer than it's keep until date (normally 48 hours after recording). You can't set a new "keep until" date to the past they, but a program recorded tonight will "exire" in 48 hours (nitpick: unless you adjust the date manually or it was record with "keep until I delete")

I have to say that this is one of the most confusing and retarded status/indicator systems I've even seen. :cool:

It could be significantly better. And it certainly hasn't scaled gracefully to larger storage sizes.

I suspect back on the original 14h (at worst quality) standard definition Tivo's it worked beter because shows that went yellow dot really were likely to be deleted soon. But now 90% of the shows on my TiVo are "expired" and some of them have been for close to a year. (I'll get around to watching them eventually. Or not... :D)

You'll get used to it. :p Once you get settled in, you'll realize that you don't have to micro-manage your recordings so much.

Expired programs won't be deleted until space is needed.
Keep an eye on your Recently Deleted folder. When it starts nearing zero is when you need to start worrying about "expired" programs.

If you have your Tivo record suggestions, the formula is a little different. You'll have a Suggestions folder in addition to Recently Deleted.
In this case you look at both folders. When Suggestions reaches zero there's no cause for alarm unless Recently Deleted is also nearing zero.
