OMG not connecting to Tivo service

4250 Views 28 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  ggieseke
I just got a message on screen that updates were out of date. I checked and the last successful update was Jan. 27. It's now Feb. 4.

I've tried everything I can think of. Rebooted modem, router and Tivo; checked all connections; replaced Ethernet cable from router to Tivo; even tried telephone connection but didn't hold much confidence in that b/c I'm using VOIP for the phone.

Tivo gets an IP from the router w/o a problem. But it can't seem to connect to the service.

I can ping Tivo's IP from within the LAN and get 15% packet loss.

I'm panicked! Is there anything else I can try? What could have caused this?

This is a S2DT that's been working fine up to now.

Thanks,

Ed

Do a manual connect and see where in the process it is failing.

Try setting a fixed IP address for the Tivo instead of using DHCP. I have an S3HD that doesn't like doing DHCP.

A manual connect? What's that?

I've tried entering a fixed IP and allowing Tivo to find one using DHCP. Neither worked.

But I don't know how to do a manual connect.

Ed

Tried that. Assigned a fixed IP on the router based on Tivo's MAC. Same problem.

I meant set a fixed IP address in the Tivo, not the router. Kind of sounds like you are setting a MAC Filter in the router. I wouldn't do that.

I tried it three ways.
1. Set the IP on the Tivo
2. Let Tivo ask the router for an available IP
3. Set the IP on the router using Tivo's MAC

Nothing worked. Bummer.

But what is a "manual connect"? Could it be a feature of later model Tivos but not S2DT?

Settings->Phone&Network->Connect to the TiVo Service now

That may not be the exact path but it's there somewhere.

Oh, I see. That's exactly what I've been doing. It gets to the second dot (I think it says "Connecting" and "Connecting"; stays there for a couple or three minutes; and that's where it fails.

I'll double check later and see if that's the exact wording; but I think it's right.

Does that tell me anything?

Ed

Not really. Looking back over your posts, 15% packet loss on a local ping seems high, but I am no network guru. You might try a different slot on the switch. Do you have a spare Ethernet adapter you could try? Go back to using a fixed IP address and make sure that all of the network settings are correct - gateway, DNS, etc.

Have you tried connecting to the TiVo from your computer and transferring a recording?

I tend to agree. The 15% packet loss is way too high. It should be zero on the local network.

I tried to set up pyTivo a couple of months ago but couldn't get it to work. There's a thread on this somewhere.

I'll try the Tivo software instead and see what happens.

Meanwhile I have a Premiere on order but I'm afraid my guide will run out before I get the cable card and Tivo service for the new box.

One correction. It fails on "Connecting"/"Configuring...".

Thanks for your help,

Ed

No real need for any additional s/w - just connect and try a transfer using your browser:

https://<tivo IP>

you should be prompted for login info. enter tivo as the user and your tivo MAK as the password.

When your attempted service connect fails, is there an error message on the "Last status" line? What do you see when you "View Network Status"?

Make sure the adapter is fully seated in the USB jack. You might also try the other slot.
Mine did the same thing. I called Tivo. They said they rolled out a large software update recently that interfered with some Tivo boxes ability to connect.

You need to unplug the Tivo and leave it unplugged for 15 minutes while all the cache's clear. (the Tivo guy told me to disconnect every cable, I just pulled the power and Cat 5). He set up a push on his side. Then 15 minutes later, plug it backed in, and everything is fine.

It's been many years since they updated the s/w on a Tivo 2. There was a large s/w update recently but it was for Premieres only. IMHO, your TiVo CSR was FOS, although if the OP hasn't tried powering down the TiVo, leaving it off for a minute or so, and powering it back up, it might be worth a shot. Waiting "15 minutes while all the cache's clear" is pure BS, and probably comes from someone who knows a few "buzz words" but in reality knows not much at all.
You need to resolve the 15% packet loss from your local LAN first. Could be an issue with either your router or your ISP.

Scott
Since this is a ping on his local network, the ISP shouldn't even be involved.
Sorry I misread nad was thinking he was getting the packet loss to the TiVo service and not to his local TiVo. You are correct that that the ISP would not be involved.

It seems I can connect with either http or https. I get a "Congratulations" screen immediately. No sign of any communication issues which seems odd considering the packet loss when pinging.

The screen doesn't require any login data and doesn't offer any functionality. It just describes some home media features.

BTW my unit has a built in ethernet port. I don't use a USB adapter.

The 'Congratulations' screen is what you get if you connect via http. You should get a login screen if you connect via https.

I have a TivoHD, not a premiere. The guy said they had been getting a lot of calls from series 2 and 3 owners, something about the update caused a problem with some of them, he needed to do something on his side and you needed to reboot the system to get it to work.

Seeing as how calling him and following his steps resolved the problem, I would't be so quick to call it pure BS. Poking around the http server of the Tivo isn't going to do anything but waste his time.
