I am thinking about dropping tivo service and the tv package I have for cable. Will I no longer be able to transfer movies from my computer to my tivo?

I bought the tivo desktop software so i could do that.

No, you won't. That, as most functions, require the service.
AFAIK the only thing you can do with an unsubbed TiVo is watch live TV and any recording made before the service was ended. And even then it nags you constantly.

If all you want to do is watch movies from your computer you're much better off buying a streaming device or NAS with playback capabilities that does not require service.

Ok. Got any suggestions for me? That will not cost to much? Will a 360 stream to the tv from a computer/drive
A lot of people I know *really* like their Apple TV's for that.
Yes the 360 will work.

Set it up as an extender
Convert the .tivo files to mp4
Stick them in a shared folder

Enjoy
I use a WDTV live for just this purpose. MP4s that are compatible with tivo also play perfectly on the WDTV. Its one of the few that can.

oh i wasn't worried about using any .tivo files. i just just tivo desktop to stream from my laptop to the tv.
If you're using a laptop anyway then why not just connect it directly to the TV?
